Quick Mittens

Materials:

1 skein Sport Weight Yarn (5 oz. Per skein); Size small - Size F (3.75 mm) crochet hook; Sizes Med. & Lrg. - Size G (4.00 mm) crochet hook; Yarn needle.

Instructions:

Instructions are written for size small with sizes medium and large in brackets. [ ]

NOTE: Do not join at end of each round unless instructed. Using a scrap piece of yarn, place marker at beginning of each round, moving marker after each round in complete.

Hand

RND 1: (Right Side) Ch 2, 8 sc in second ch from hook; do not join, place marker. NOTE: Mark last round as right side.

RND 2: 2 sc in each sc around: 16 sc.

RND 3: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around : 24 sc.

RND 4: (Sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 27 sc.

TO WORK FRONT POST DOUBLE CROCHET (abbrev. FPdc): YO, insert hook from front to back around post of sc one rnd below next sc, YO and pull up a loop even with last st made, (YO and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip sc behind FPdc. (Note: After Rnd 6, work FPdc around sc before next FPdc.)

RND 5: (Sc in next 2 sc, work FPdc) around: 9 FPdc.

RND 6: Sc in each st around.

RNDS 7-15 [19-23]: Repeat Rnds 5 and 6, 4 [6-8] times; then repeat Rnd 5 once more; do not finish off.

Right Mitt Only

RND 16 [20-24]: Sc in next 4 sts, ch 4 loosely, skip next 4 sts (Thumb opening), sc in next 19 sts.

RND 17 [21-25]: Sc in next 2 sc, work FPdc, sc in next sc and in next 4 chs, work FPdc, (sc in next 2 sc, work FPdc) around; do not finish off.

Left Mitt Only

RND 16 [20-24]: Sc in next 19 sts, ch 4 loosely, skip next 4 sts (Thumb opening), sc in next 4 sts.

RND 17 [21-25]: (Sc in next 2 sc, work FPdc) 6 times, sc in next sc and in next 4 chs, work FPdc, sc in next 2 sc, work FPdc; do not finish off.

Both Mittens

Size Small Only

RND 18: Sc in each st around; do not finish off.

Sizes medium and large only

RNDS [23-27] - [26-30]: Repeat Rnds 5 and 6 twice; do not finish off.

Cuff (All Sizes)

TO DECREASE: Pull up a loop in next 2 sc, YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook (counts as one sc).

FOUNDATION RND: Decrease, (sc in next 4 sc, decrease) 4 times, sc in next sc: 22 sc.

Ch 11 loosely. ROW 1: Sc in back ridge of second ch from hook and each ch across, sc in first 2 sc on Foundation Rnd. : 12 sc.

ROW 2: Turn; skip first 2 sc, sc in Back Loop Only of next sc and each sc across: 10 sc.

ROW 3: Ch 1, turn; sc in Back Loop Only of each sc across, sc in both loops of next 2 sc on Foundation Rnd.: 12 sc.

ROWS 4-22: Repeat Rows 2 and 3, 9 times; then repeat Row 2 once more.

JOINING ROW: Turn; with wrong sides together and working in Back Loops Only of sts on Rnd 22 and in free loops of beginning ch, slip st in each st across; finish off.

Thumb

RND 1: With right side facing and working in unworked sts and in free loops of ch-4 on Hand, join yarn with sc in first ch; sc in next 2 chs, 2 sc in next ch, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next sc; do not join, place marker: 10 sc.

RNDS 2-4: Sc in each sc around.

RND 5: (Sc in next 3 sc, decrease) twice: 8 sc.

Repeat Rnd 2 until Thumb measures approx. 1 3/4 [2 - 2 1/4]" or desired length; finish off leaving a long end for sewing. Thread yarn needle with end and weave through stitches on last round; gather tightly and secure end.
