Baby's Lacey Dress
Materials:
4 oz. - 3-ply Baby Wool;
Two No. 11 knitting needles;
1 crochet hook (for button loops and edging around shoulders/neck);
6 small buttons;
Two safety pins;
2 yds. Ribbon.
Tension: 8 1/2 sts. and 10 rows = 1 inch
Instructions:
Pattern:
1st ROW: K1, *yfwd, Sl1, K2tog, psso, yfwd, K3. Repeat from * to end of row.
2nd ROW: K1, purl to last st. K1.
3rd ROW: K4, yfwd, Sl1, K2tog, psso, yfwd, K3. Repeat from * to last 3 sts. Yfwd, K2tog, K1.
4th ROW: As 2nd row. Repeat these 4 rows once.
9th ROW: Knit.
10th ROW: As 2nd row. Repeat 9th and 10th rows twice. These
14 rows complete one pattern.
Smocking Pattern:
Count over 6 sts. from point of left hand needle. Insert point of right hand needle between the 6th and 7th sts. on left hand needle. Pass the yarn around the point of the right hand needle as for knitting and draw a loop through to the front of work. Drawing the loop evenly across the front of the first 6 sts., place it on the left hand needle. Knit the loop together with the first st. on the left hand needle. K1, P2, K2. (The working of these 6 sts. will be termed "Smock 6" throughtout).
Front:
Cast on 145 sts.
1st ROW: Knit.
2nd ROW: K1. Purl to last st. K1. Repeat these 2 rows once.
5th ROW: K1, * yfwd, K2tog, K1. Repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat 2nd row once, the 1st and 2nd rows twice.
To form picot edge:
Fold the work in half. Holding the needle containing the sts. in the left hand, with the 2nd needle knit together 1 st from the needle and 1 st from the cast-on row until all sts. are worked across the needle. This forms the hem, with the 5th row forming the picot edge. Repeat 2nd row once, the 1st and 2nd rows once. ** Work 7 complete patterns, then to end ot 12th row of 8th pattern.
NEXT ROW: (K2tog) 9 times, * K2, (K2tog) 8 times. Repeat from * to last st. K1. (80 sts. on needle)
NEXT ROW: K1. Purl to last st. K1. Work now measures approx. 10 1/2 ins. from beginning.
To make yoke:
1st ROW: K1, * K2, P2. Repeat from * to last 3 sts. K3.
2nd ROW: K1, * P2, K2. Repeat from * to last 3 sts. P2, K1.
3rd ROW: K1, * Smock 6, P2. Repeat from * to last 7 sts. Smock 6, K1.
4th ROW: As 2nd row.
5th ROW: As 1st row.
6th ROW: As 2nd row:
7th ROW: K3, P2, * Smock 6, P2. Repeat from * to last 3 sts. K3.
8th ROW: As 2nd row.
These 8 rows complete on pattern.
To shape armholes:
Keeping continuity of pattern cast off 4 sts. beginning next 4 rows. Continue even in pattern until armhole measures 2 1/2 ins. from first shaping.
To shape neck:
Work 20 sts. in pattern. Cast off 24 sts. Work 20 sts. in pattern. Working on last 20 sts. continue even until armhole measures 3 1/2 ins. from first shaping. Cast off. Join yarn at neck edge to remaining 20 sts. and work to correspond to other side.
Back:
Work exactly as given for Front until armhole measures 3 ins. from first shaping, instead of 2 1/2 ins. Shape neck as given for Front.
Sleeves:
Cast on 48 sts. Repeat 1st to 8th row of Yoke pattern once.
NEXT ROW: * K1, Inc. 1 st in next st. Repeat from * to end of row. (72 sts. on needle) Proceed: -
1st ROW: K1. Purl to last st. K1.
2nd ROW: Knit, inc. 1 st at end or row.
3rd ROW: As 1st row.
Work one complete pattern as given for skirt.
To shape cap:
Keeping continuity of pattern dec. 1 st. each end of needle on next and every alternate row to 45 sts. on needle. Cast off remaining sts. knitting 2 sts. together when casting off.
To make up:
Press skirt and sleeves carefully. Do not press yoke. Sew side and sleeve seams and 1/4" of each shoulder seam. Sew in sleeves, gathering extra fullness across top 1 1/2 ins. of armhole. Work 2 rows s.c. all around neck and shoulder openings, working 3 ch-3 loops on each shoulder. Sew buttons to correspond to loops.
