GEORGE STRAIT George Strait early hits demonstrate his easy likeness for honky-tonk and Western swing as well as his ability to change direction gracefully toward country-pop. From the very beginning, he's worked with some of the best songwriters and producers in the business. The movie portrayed Straits as a country star who walks away from the smoke and mirrors to get back to his down-home roots. The ballad "When Did You Stop Loving Me" is as pure country as it gets in this day and age, while "The King of Broken Hearts" and "Where the Sidewalk Ends" introduced Strait's audience to an exceptionally gifted songwriter named Jim Lauderdale. Pure Country", gives listeners the classic country sound for a love ballad. The solo within the song uses a great steel guitar sound. "Heartland" is an upbeat honky tonk sound that Strait displayed on every album. He also appeared as himself in The Horse Whisperer (1998) and Grand Champion (2002).
