Supporting the City Council Pay Raise - TTP-Dallas Editorial
On May 5, Trust the People - Dallas urges voters to approve the city council pay increase proposal. We support this proposal, because we believe that service on the city council should be open to all not just those who are independently wealthy or who have financial support from their family or through other means.
Dallas is a world-class, cosmopolitan city, and running the city is a full-time job for the mayor and fourteen city council members. While members usually put in 40+ hours of city related work weekly, they are only paid $50 per meeting (meetings are once a week) for their work.
We firmly believe that civil service should not cause financial burden upon those who serve. The pay raise proposal is quite modest considering the work that is done by our city council members. Council members would receive an annual salary of $37,500 and the mayor would receive a salary of $60,000. Please vote yes on May 5. - Byron LaMasters

All Richardson Voters! Support Carol Wilson for re-election! - TTP-Dallas Editorial
She's a registered Democrat (non-partisan race) running against a registered Republican. She's served for six years and her passion is working to preserve open-spaces and parks. She's also helped bringing DART light rail to Richardson. Wilson also works to make sure that tax money is used for public services and facilities first, before irresponsible tax cuts or other giveaways. - Byron LaMasters

McKinney City Council:
"The Democratic Party of Collin County is providing support to Alonzo James Tutson and Gilda Garza, who are running for City Council in McKinney!"

Dallas City Council District 6 - Oak Cliff, West and North Dallas - TTP-Dallas Editorial
"Contractor Ed Oakley has an impressive record of service on local boards and commissions that has prepared him well to become a City Council member. Mr. Oakley recently stepped down as vice chairman of the Dallas City Plan Commission to run for this seat. While on the commission, he worked to revise city zoning laws that threatened a number of historic minority neighborhoods. Mr. Oakley also has been working with neighborhoods affected by the Trinity River improvements plan. Although this council seat has always been filled by African-Americans, Mr. Oakley's qualifications and the changing demographics of the district give him the nod in a crowded field." - Dallas Morning News Editorial.
Trust the People - Dallas agrees with the Dallas Morning News, that Ed Oakley should be our next city councilman for the 6th district. Oakley is a registered Democrat and has a progressive record. He has also received the endorsements of the Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance (Oakley is openly gay) and the Central Labor Council
Another creditable candidate is Roy Williams, one of the chief plaintiffs in the lawsuit forcing Dallas into the 14-1 districting plan. We support Mr. Williams work, but he has run unsuccessfully on several previous occasions, and we believe that Ed Oakley is the best candidate to win in district 6. Please vote for Ed Oakley on May 5th.

Trust the People - Dallas: VOTER EDUCATION...

The League of Women Voters of Dallas
The League of Women Voters of Richardson
The League of Women Voters of Collin County

Dallas City Council District 1 - North Oak Cliff and West Dallas
Three-term incumbent Steve Salazar, who currently is deputy mayor pro tem, has worked to bring economic development and jobs for his constituents. Tens of millions of dollars in construction at Pinnacle Park and vast retail and residential development have occurred in Oak Cliff during his tenure. He has been endorsed by the Dallas Morning News, the Central Labor Council, and the Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance.
Dr. Elba Garcia is an immigrant from Mexico, who has attained a good deal of success in her life. She is the wife of former city councilman and current State Representative Domingo Garcia (D-Dallas). She has a successful dental practice and is challenging Steve Salazar for City Council District 1.
Both candidates support an employment and housing (public accomadations) non-discrimination policy that includes sexual orientation. Salazar was the first candidate to publicly support the living wage ordinance, and I think that Garcia supports it as well. Trust the People - Dallas urges District 1 voters to take a good look at the two candidates and vote on May 5th.

Dallas City Council District 13 - Northwest Dallas
This race, arguable the most contentious in the city is between Republicans Mitchell Rasansky and Jim Graham for the seat of retiring Donna Blumer . Neither candidate is very progressive, and both have the backing of some scary people. Trust the People - Dallas does not endorse either candidate.
Jim Graham is an oil executive and is a past president of the Dallas Parks and Recreation Board, a past chairman of the Dallas World Cup 1994 Bid Committee, current president of the Friends of Fair Park and a current member of the board of the Dallas 2012 Olympic Bid Committee. He has been endorsed by the Dallas Morning News, the DGLA (Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance). He has also been endorsed by Republicans Roger Staubach and Bill Hill. According to a TTP-Dallas member, Jim Graham's campaign literature that says, "Jim was one of the founding directors of Dr. James Dobson's Focus On The Family..." (NOT a friendly bunch of people.. ultra-conservative Christian organization). On the other hand, he pledged to the DGLA that he would support a non-discrimination ordinance including sexual orientation. I believe that he has also been endorsed by several Dallas county Democrats, State Rep. Terri Hodge (D-Dallas) and State Rep Domingo Garcia (D-Dallas).
Mitchell Rasansky has served on the City Plan Commission (Vice Chair), Board of Adjustment, plus chaired several sub-committees. He is active in the Congregation Shearith Israel (Past President). He has served on several civic and political boards. He has also been a Vice Chairman of a Grand Jury. He has been endorsed by most of the districts neighborhood groups, and by outgoing city councilwoman and social conservative, Donna Blumer. He has also been endorsed by Tom Pauken and Mary Ann Collins. Pauken is high-ranking Texas Republican. Mrs. Collins was involved in stopping all of the Election Code revisions that had been endorsed by Debra Danburg (D-Houston), in a previous Legislative Session.
Please Vote on May 5th

Dallas County School Board Race:
April 23, 2001, Dallas Morning News Article:

There is no Trust the People - Dallas endorsement in this race. Both candidates are qualified Democrats, and we are confident that both would serve well. However, we urge everyone in Dallas county to vote in this race between Martin Hoffman and Fletcher Yates.

About Martin Hoffman...
Statement from Mr. Hoffman:
"The decisions made by the Dallas School Board affect almost every child in public school in Dallas County. This agency provides not only provides busing services for our Dallas children, but media services, Internet services and psychological services. Currently, the Internet services provided by this agency only go to one school district, Highland Park Independent School District. I believe that these services should be expanded. I also believe that access to the Dallas County School Board should be expanded. Also, currently, the board meets in the middle of the day when most parents cannot attend the meetings. If elected, I will fight to move these meetings to a time more convenient for all the citizens of Dallas.
This is a contest about ideas and what type of future the children will face in the 21st Century. I believe that I can best lead this board into the next century."

About Fletcher Yates...
Statement from Mr. Yates:
"It was over twenty five years ago that I moved to the city of Irving to continue my career with American Airlines. Since my arrival, I have continually increased my involvement with the community.
I have been heavily involved in the educational arena because I realize the benefits provided to both the individual and the community by assuring the availability of educational opportunities. I believe that my actions definitely support my works as witnessed by my continued service on many committees and associations at both the local and state level.
I am now ready to increase my community responsibilities. As a man of actions, I am eagerly pursuing the re-election of Board Member to provide the type of representation to each citizen that I myself would like to have.
I am an avid supporter of the consistent, continual communication at all levels. I will be an easily accessible Board Member to assure that both your needs, and the community's needs, are being met. I will make every effort to assure that the necessary communication between the multitude of government agencies that must be dealt with in today's smaller and smaller world does happen. I will provide you with the information you need to feel comfortable that your community is focused on the needs of its young citizens"
