Books, Festivals and Shopping

Hay on Wye is conveniently located just 4 miles from Cottage Farm and boasts possibly the largest collection of second-hand book shops in the world. This historic small market town is located on Offa's Dyke and hosts the May Literary Festival which attracts thousands of visitors (and celebrities) each year.

The Cathedral City of Hereford is located 18 miles to the east and maintains the atmosphere of a pleasant market town.  It offers the famous Mappa Mundi exhibition, the first and second largest chained library collections and the Cider Museum.
Leaving the car behind

Middlewood provides an excellent base for activities in the Golden Valley, Wye Valley, Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons - we even have three walks which start at the farm gate!
Transport

Due to it's very quiet, rural location, Middlewood is best reached by car, but buses and taxi's operate out of Hay on Wye and Hereford.  The nearest Train station is in Hereford.
History

Middlewood is situated in the civil parish of Clifford and the parochial parish of Hardwicke.  Middlewood is first mentioned in the Domesday Book with Earl Harold owning 2 Hides (approximately 240 acres), including Bach and Harewood.  These lands in Valle Stradelie lie on the northern boundary of Dorstone, but mostly in the parish of Clifford.  The first recorded property was a church commissioned in 1200 by Walter de Clifford upon his return from the Crusades.

Cottage Farm was converted in the 1980's from an orginal hay loft that was part of the Middlewood estate, owned by a single family from the late 1770's until 1905.
