Guide to Modelling the International Space Station

Updated August 2, 2006

The International Space Station (ISS) is one of the most complicated construction projects in history. It is also one of the most difficult space topics to find current and detailed modelling information on, since it is constantly "under construction". This Guide will summarize all of the information I've compiled on making an accurate model of the ISS as it is built. Note that this Guide is itself "under construction", and it's easier for me to add to it while online than to do it offline and then open the site. So, not everything works yet.

I've started a second model of the ISS in its current configuration. This one uses the excellent resin modules from RealSpace Models, which really saves a huge amount of detailing. It will use the trusses and detail set from the Intermountain Railway kit, which is still the best complete kit for modeling the ISS. To follow this build-in-progress, go here.

My first attempt was a 1/144-scale model built using the kit by InterMountain Railway. I did some detailing, but it really was a good testbed for trying out techniques for the "real" model.
