FBI investigating anthrax in USA
Recent cases of exposure to anthrax have caused anxiety over chemical and biological agents. Although XXXXXXXXXXXXXX Security has no reason to believe that any XXXXXXXXXXXX site will be subject to anthrax exposure, they are providing information concerning suspicious packages or letters and the actions that should be taken if a suspected exposure to anthrax were to occur. It is important to note that effective dispersal of anthrax is difficult, and it cannot spread person-to-person.. Also, the bacteria cannot survive exposure to sunlight or direct moisture. DELIVERY METHODS The recent anthrax incidents involve delivery through letters or packages opened by unsuspecting people. Anthrax delivered in this manner typically resembles a white, dry, fine, powdery substance. IDENTIFYING SUSPECT PARCELS Similar to the procedures for suspected explosive devices, pay attention to the appearance, wrapping, addressing, postage or any other irregularities of the parcel. Was the parcel expected? Do you know the sender? If not, and you feel the item is suspicious, contact your supervisor and appropriate security personnel for further action. IF YOU OPEN A PARCEL AND ENCOUNTER AN UNIDENTIFIED SUBSTANCE: Do not panic. Do not touch, smell, taste, or try to analyze the substance. Carefully place the item on your desk and step away. Alert others to keep away from the area. Notify the proper authorities. Site security will provide phone numbers. Turn off any circulating fans, air conditioners, or heaters. Wash your hands with soap and water, being careful not to touch your face or other objects before doing so. Return to the immediate area to minimize the spread of contamination via clothing or shoes and to warn others who may enter. Wait for trained medical and decontamination personnel to arrive. Inform the Security Control Center of the situation, regardless of your location. Anthrax spores infect only if inhaled, ingested, or introduced into an open wound or the eyes. Even if exposure does occur, the victim is not contagious, and the condition is treatable with antibiotics if identified early. Ensure that XXXXXXXXXXX Occupational Health Services is immediately notified
