York District } On this Twenty-Ninth day
of April, One Thousand Eight & Forty Eight
personally appeared before me M.J.
Clawson, Commissioner in equity for
York District, Elizabeth Marsh, a widow
of the District aforesaid aged 85 years
who being first sworn according to law
doth on her oath make the following dec-
laration, in order to allow the benefit of the
provision made by the act of Congrys
passed July 7th 1838, entitled “An Act
Granting Half Pay Of Pensions To Certain
Widows”, also the benefit of the acts of
March 3d 1843 & June 17th 1844, that he
was a Soldier in the United States
Army, and a Pensioner at the rate
of ninety six dollars per annum.
She further declares that she was
married to the said Robert Marsh
on the __ day of August 1783, accord-
ing to the form and ceremony of
the Pamunky Tribe of Indians to
which she belonged & that is: after the
publication of their marriage bands
three ______ times in their Church in
Missionary Station they “went together”
as man & wife, on the day & year last
aforesaid, this was according to the
rite and custom of the Nation to which
they belonged. No record of their
marriage was ever made, as
your declarant supposes, nor
was it necessary to constitute the
