South Carolina } Personally appeared before me Joseph F.
York District } White one of the Magistrates for said
District—Edward Smith and makes oath, to the
following statements that he was well acquainted
with Robert Marsh, an Indian of the Pamunky
Tribe as deponent always understood, who settled
in Lancaster District some 35 of 40 years since
where he resided some five or six years from
where he remained and settled in York District
in three miles of deponent, where the said Robert
Marsh died leaving his wife Elizabeth a widow.
Deponent says that the said Robert Marsh was a Pentioner
of the United States at $96.00 a year, and was a Minister
of the Baptist denomination from his first acquaintance
with him. Deponent was also intimately acquainted with the
family of said Robert Marsh Viz, Robert A., Betsey,
Sarah and Rhoda. Deponent says that Kity was the oldest
child of Robert & Elizabeth Marsh, the present claimant
and year of their said marriage, as he has always
understood and believed. And that the Register of Robert
Marsh’s family hereunto appeared he believes to be correct.
Deponent says that he has always understood that the
said Robert & Elizabeth Marsh were married according
to the solemnities of their Tribe some twelve months
previous to the birth of their first child.
