Liberalister förespråkar liberalism, en individualistisk ideologi som grundades under upplysningstiden. Det är ett brett begrepp som beskriver förespråkare av klassisk, social eller konservativ liberalism. Det ställer sig emot kollektivistiska ideologier som kommunism, fascism, feminism, socialism, islamism och nazism.
"Individualist" betyder inte "individ". "Individualism" refererar till tankesättet att individen är fokal, det vill säga att individens rättigheter är primära över det kollektiva.
