The Cornstalk Institute’s Learning To Lead Program is
currently recruiting volunteer mentors for the 2000-2001 school year. Mentors
must be High School freshmen and older. Mentors will spend 2 hours each week
with their assigned middle school student mentoring/tutoring their student. Each
mentor will receive a fifteen hour training on mentoring skills of
communication, developing rapport, building relationships, and modeling
appropriate school behavior. This is an opportunity to gain experience in a
social service environment and become aware of common practices in this
environment. In addition, gain a reference in the social service field and
create a base for case management skills which can be used in the work setting.
Each mentor will complete short weekly progress reports after each weekly
session and will complete a survey at the end of the program. Aside from this
excellent opportunity, the mentor will be providing a student with a meaningful
experience to last a lifetime.
