The Cornstalk Institute is a non-profit youth advocacy agency serving Albuquerque youth.  The learning to lead program is a year-long program being offered to the students of Washington and Jefferson Middle Schools.  The goal of this free program is to improve students’ academics as well as enhance a variety of social skills.  One day a week, students will be brought to Albuquerque High School where they will meet with a high school mentor to work on academic skills such as time management and homework.  The second day will be spent at the Cornstalk Institute playing a variety of experiential games which enhance stress management, anger management, communication, leadership, problem solving and teamwork skills. Students will also participate in some Saturday field trips as well as service learning projects throughout the school year.  Your responsibility as a parent is to pick your student up from their respective middle school after program and attend one day of parent training at Cornstalk every six weeks.  If you have further questions, please call Matt or Jon at Cornstalk at 873-1721 and we will be happy to help.  We look forward to meeting you soon.

Mentors:

As a mentor you have a very important role to play. You are embarking on a wonderful journey that will profoundly impact the life of a child and hopefully your own as well. It is important that you understand the depth and scope of your commitment. We have asked for a minimum of a two hour a week commitment with at least one additional Saturday activity. Ideally we would like you to develop an ongoing relationship with your student which would include school visits, home visits and participation in Cornstalk's experiential activities. During training Cornstalk staff will describe in detail the ideas and philosophies of the experiential component of the program. Click here to apply
