The melancholy, or melan, grab is with your front hand between your feet on the heel edge of your board. You may do this one half-cab all the time but try doing it regular to make it a little harder.
The Melancholy (and others in its class) are slightly more difficult grabs. These requirs a fair amount of air and good balance mainly because these tricks force you to grab the board in ways that seem awkward and difficult at first.
Half-cab: Starting with your wrong foot foward position, the rider uses the wake to get into the air and then changes direction.
