The Gray Hall
A man is walking down a long gray featureless hallway. His brown hair is lusterless in the flickering torchlight, and his stride is faltering. His hazel eyes have turned grey, and not even the gold rings around his pupils seem to give his eyes much life. His breathing is shallow and there seems to be a strange presence about him. Whether it be one of power, sadness, anger, or hopelessness, it is hard to tell.
His faltering stride carriers him further and further along the gray stones, and his shadow dances in the torchlight. Ahead, down the long corridor, there seems to be an opening, filled with light and warmth. Behind, there is darkness and from that darkness the faint impression of voices talking, shouting, and screaming. His feet continue to carry him forward of their own accord.
The torches are growing farther and farther apart, and in the passing moments of darkness his gray eyes seem to somehow glow. For a moment life, bright, shining, and new, flares in his eyes. It seems that a burden has lifted from his shoulders. Swiftly as it has come the flame of life is banked down, suppressed under grief and sorrow. His faltering steps become more sure.
The distance between where he is and where he is going slowly, surely, grows less and less. With each step, his strength seems to fade and grow. The rhythmic shuffle of his feet only slightly faster then his heart beat. Suddenly he stops. His face is thoughtful. He looks back over his shoulder, back into the darkness. The torches that he has past are flickering, and fading. A little smile plays across his face, making a mockery of what some would call happiness. He feet of their own accord begin to walk forward once more.
He comes to the edge of the corridor, to the edge of the light and warmth. His steps no longer falter. His hair seems to have acquired luster. His gray eyes are shifting, changing. A strange emotion seems to play across his face; it might almost be called wonder. A ripple seems to pass across his body. His feet take the last step, and he passes into the light. As he disappears from sight, a sigh is heard, followed by two words: "I remember."
