Does God Play Favorites?
written April 11th, 2003
"While he was yet speaking, there came also another and said, 'The fire of God is fallen from heaven and hath burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I only am escaped alone to tell thee." (Job 1:16)
In the first chapter of Job, one servant after another comes to Job, telling him that he alone has escaped the deaths caused by God. Job looses his servants and even his family. Yet, isn't it odd that all these people suffered and died to teach him a lesson?

Over and over in the Bible, certain people die or are disregarded, while others have a purpose. Clearly not everyone is saved and not everyone goes to heaven. According to the Bible, those people were known to God before the formation of the earth. It seems that some people are chosen/favored by God. David was a murderer and adulterer, yet God chose him. Most likely there were other, more holy men. So, what about the rest? That is a question I'm not prepared to answer. Why would Joey be made to suffer so unless destined for greatness? But why? Only God knows the answer. Maybe someday He'll tell me why, because I really want to know.

An Afterthought (later that evening):
The oddest part is that God seems to often judge by looks. David's boyish good looks won over Saul's son Jonathan's affection. Esau was born hairy while his brother Jacob was born beautiful and chosen by God. Perhaps it's just coincidence that the few times appearances are described, God favors the beautiful males over the ugly. But then, if God knew before time, He made them better looking. Certainly an inconclusive thought...
