We found a wonderful organization called Brain-Net that was holding a clinic in Pennsylvania in July. Brain-Net develops individualized home programs for brain injured children utilizing proven, yet widely unknown, techniques. After reading about it and discussing this program with people who have tried it, we decided it was exactly what Cooper needed. We did some quick fundraising and planning and attended the clinic July 17-21.
We spent our time there learning a lot! They don't focus on the brain cells that are damaged or dead, but on the ones that are still around - which is significantly more! They assessed Cooper and taught us his very own program addressing exactly what he needs right now. We were also able to meet Chris Hipsher there who put together "Cooper's Corner". Chris attended the clinic with us to learn more about what they do.
They have a lot of great ideas for getting kids to move. Some parts called for us to build some equipment and get volunteers to help. That's kept us busy since we've returned along with getting started on his home program. We've met some wonderful people from our neighborhood that have been volunteering their time. It's been so great to have so much to do with Cooper now. Before we knew some things, but nothing specifically addressing his current needs. It was very frustrating to watch him lay there and feel unable to help him. Now we don't feel so helpless!
We also finished up the first set of Hyperbaric treatments. Cooper has had 40 now and will have a break until October. He completes 40 at a time and then a break for a month or so. They say we may not start to see changes until after 80 treatments, but we're already seeing small, yet significant, steps. His eyes are focusing much better and he seems to be seeing more detail rather that just outline as before. He began sucking a bottle and isn't as constipated. These are all things they predicted may happen so we feel we're on the right track!
We've also noticed that Cooper is already progressing with his home program! We think Hyperbaric has really helped this along. We use a technique on him called Patterning which is simply moving his body back-and-forth in a creeping pattern. Cooper is starting to help us move his limbs and head in this pattern! We also place him on a ramp and encourage him to use his feet to push himself down. At first he just laid there, but within a week he's begun to push himself down with very little help!
We're very excited where this may take Cooper!
The program calls for 1/2 hour 6 times a day. It's not too strenuous, but a little time consuming. We must warn you all that we will be staying on task with this which will keep us from keeping in touch as much as we'd like. People are always welcome to visit, but it's difficult for us to travel because of the needed equipment. But beware - we may turn you into therapy helpers while you're here!
If anyone lives nearby and is interested in volunteering to help out with Cooper's home program, just let us know! We appreciate your continued support! Thank you for being in Cooper's Corner!
