NDRI is situated in Karnal, which is 125Km
north of Delhi in the state of Haryana on the National Highway
No: 1( G.T.Road). It is a small town with a population of 5
Lakhs. The city is known to be the birth place of the great
warrior Karna and so named as Karnal.
The Institute
NDRI was set up in 1923 in
Bangalore, with the objective of developing dairying in India.
It was shifted to Karnal in the year 1957. The B.Tech(Dairy
Technology) course was started in the same year. Apart from
this NDRI offers postgraduate programmes in subjects like
Dairy Engineering, Dairy Microbiology, Dairy Chemistry etc.
NDRI has always provided its students with high quality
education in the field of dairying. The institute has been
recognized as the centre for excellence in Dairying in India
by the Government of India.
Model Dairy Plant
The Model Dairy Plant was
a World Bank - NDDB project. It was inaugrated by Dr.Vargheese
Kurian in 1997. The plant is fully automated and works on the
Programmable Logical Control systems. It has a processing
capacity of 1,20,000 lts of milk daily. This plant was built
with the objective of providing the B.Tech (D.T) students with
training in the third year of their course. Currently the
plant is run completely by the students. The plant presently
produces products like packed fluid milk, cheese, ice cream,
ghee and paneer.
Cattle Yard and Experimental
Dairy
The Institute has a Cattle Yard
which houses a herd of 2000 cows and buffaloes. The Cattle
Yard acts as a laboratory where the cattle is kept under
observation. The cattle produces about 8000 litres of milk
daily which is processed at the Experimental Dairy and sold at
the Milk Parlour. The Experimental Dairy has 10000 litres of
milk processing capacity. The students use this dairy to carry
out pilot tests for different products.The NDRI library is one
of the best in this part of the country and has about 1,00,000
books and journals on Dairying.
Other Facilities
NDRI provides hostel
accomodations for all the students enrolled at the institute.
There are four hostels, Brahmaputra, Sutlej, Krishna and
Kaveri. The hostels have all the necessary ammenities like a
Gymnasium, Reading and Music Rooms, T.V.Rooms,Badminton Courts
and a Tennis Court. There is also a students playground with a
Cricket Pitch, Volley Ball court and a Basket Ball Court. The
NDRI auditorium, which is considered to be one of the best in
the Northern India stands in the middle of the campus. The
students and staff at the campus are provided with free
quality health care through its 20 bed Health
Complex.
