This is one of the most basic tricks to teach your dog. Start in a room with only you, your dog, and a bunch of treats. Stand in front of your dog with a treat in your hand and put it above your dogs nose. Slowly move the treat backwards and the dog should naturally go into the sit position. You should say the command "sit" right as the legs are bending into the sit. If the dog doesn't dont give it the treat but don't make a fuss. Keep practicing and don't get upset if he doesn't learn it completely on the first day it takes time. Gradually start substituting praise for treats so that later if you tell him to sit and you don't have a treat he'll do it anyway. After you teach your dog to sit, you are ready to teach it come. |

After you teach your dog to sit and come you should teach him to stay Stand in front of your dog and give him the sit comand. Then hold out your hand in a stop signal and say stay. Then slowly walk away a few feet. Wait a few seconds and say good dog, come. Then when your dog comes give him a treat. If at any point during this procedure the dog gets up or walks around take him back to the exact spot he was and try again. don't scold him or punish and eventually he will understand he is supposed to just stay there and do nothing until you call him. This involes sit, come, stay and you can also incorporate down into the command. Just keep at it and be patient. |
