1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

G-dub Baby!

This is G-Dub number three. Third time is a charm right? First was the 1981, then the short lived, drove only a couple of times 1988 and now this 1989. I think I finally got the one I wanted.

This Jeep is equiped with an AMC 360 cu.in. V8, Chrysler's Torqueflite 727 transmission, and a NewProcess transfer case giving 2WD, 4WD hi and 4WD low. It has Dana 44 front and rear axles with 3.31 gears and the trailer towing group.

The previous owner put a 3" Rough Country lift on it. I thought that was a nice bonus when I was bidding for it on Ebay. The reality is a bit different. The kit that was installed is the cheapest one on the market and completely deserving of its name. It's rough. The front springs are way too stiff. In the cheap version of this kit, you only get lifting blocks in the back. That's what this one's got. It looks precariously perched. And the pinion angle doesn't seem exactly right either. Needless to say, the thing rides horribly, much worse that my other Jeeps. I think this kit is coming out and BJ's 2" all spring kit will go in. In the mean time its going to get some 31" tires to fill up the wheelwells. It looks a bit silly now on those stock treads.

The first few pics are the day I got it home. It came from the Texas Panhandle. It was filthy with tons of red dust everywhere. Even after three or four carwashes, red dirt was seeping out of the crevasses. The Jeep had received paint above the woodgrain at some point in its life. The bottom now looked pretty crappy. I stripped it down and had everything from the side glass down repainted. I also put 3M stoneguard paint protection film on the rockers and rear quarters to prevent stone chips etc., when going off-road. It also got a new grill surround which is a horrible Tiawanese reproduction in plastic, not aluminum like its supposed to be.

Mechanically, the Jeep is pretty good. Excelent oil pressure, runs cool, good A/C. I've reassembled the smog system and had some trouble with broken bolts in the RH exhaust manifold in the process, but its all back together now and nothing else has broken yet. Electrically the Jeep is pretty good. All the windows work properly, including both of the tailgate switches. The locks and the overhead temp/compass still need a little help.
