![]() | I call it the G-dub, even though its not actually a Grand Wagoneer. The "Grand" moniker was added to the Full Size Jeep (FSJ) in 1984 when a second Wagoneer was introduced on the smaller, Cherokee platform. Before that time, top level trim on FSJs was Wagoneer Limited. This Jeep is equiped with an AMC 360 cu.in. V8, Chrysler's Torqueflite 727 transmission, and a Quadratrac transfer case giving three 4-wheel drive modes. It has Dana 44 front and AMC 20 axles and a Motorcraft 2100 carb. I kept this jeep for one summer season. Despite the notorious unreliablility of AMC Jeeps, this one was pretty good for the price. The oil pump failed, and the fuel pump vapor locked easily. I added a switchable electric pump and rebuilt the oil pump. I charged the A/C when I got it and it held up ' till August, when a leak developed in the condensor. I took it off-road a few times, and it was suprisingly capable off-road, even on its ordinary street tires. As for towing, not so good. Though this was the reason I'd bought the Jeep, the regular 2.72:1 axles coupled with the fairly anemic AMC powerplant left a lot to be desired in the acceleration department. This is why I purchased another Jeep ('88) with the 3.31:1 towing package. It was a total lemon - sold it right away in the fall without using it much. Getting up slick boat ramps with the QT in low was a breeze though. The thing climbs like a goat. |
