Subject: Re: On-going Cone E-mails...

I've been extremely lucky that most times I've gone to Yankee Stadium in the
past 5 years (some 20 times, approximately), I've gotten to see Coney pitch
time and again. I was more than upset, though, that I didn't get to see the
perfecto, of all games when it happened, though!!!>:( (I was in Israel, and
just happened to find out about it because this kid from Nebraska on our trip
who was a Yankee fan bought a copy of The Jerusalem Post, and was rubbing it
the back page headline, which caught my eye...) However, I do have some
other great memories of him pitching.

The first game I ever saw him pitch was in 1995; this was also right around
the time I'd started to get a little interested in baseball, so it was also
the first time I'd ever heard of him PERIOD, when on the way to the game, my
mom's friend mentioned "oh they have the good guy pitching for them tonite.
David Cone." Don't know why, but from that night on I was hooked -- you know
how you become attached to something all of a sudden and you don't know why?
That's how I felt that night. (BTW, the Yanks won that night 5-4... but I
can't remember if Coney got the win or not!) It was almost as if, going into
the '96 season, you pulled for the guy just because there was something about
him that stole your heart, too. I think he got everyone when that whole
aneurysm thing came out.

I'll never forget the day he came back -- September 1, I believe -- and
purposely making sure I was home to watch the game against Oakland on TV.
And as he went out I thought to myself "maybe he'll pitch a no-hitter today".
No joke-- and as you all know, he came pretty darn close; Rivera and a
stupid umpire just messed him up. He seemed untouchable that day.

I was also at the "rubber game" of the first ever Yankee-Mets Series (1997)
when David pitched 6 innings of no-hit ball before those blasted Mets broke
it open and tied it up, giving Coney another notorious no-decision. (Of
course, it made me happy when Tino got the game-winning hit, but that's
another story...) But the best game I was ever at, ironically, was one of
the worst games Cone ever pitched; game 1 of the 1997 playoffs where Raines,
Jeter, and O'Neill went back-to-back-to-back over the fence to get the Yanx
out of a hole where Cone had given up 6 runs in 2 innings; probably his only
poor performance ever in a playoff game. :( It hurt to see him give up all
those runs, and for people to mumble, "well is his career over yer?", because
for me especially, I didn't want it all to end yet -- it was just too soon.

And that's still how I feel now; I just don't think it's time yet to say
goodbye, and don't want it all to be over like that. I'm still clinging to
the hope that Coney will have a good second half, which means a few more
glorious years left in that arm of his.

It sounds like he was having a really good time, and
that's exactly the way I think of him, as a real fun guy!

My Cone memory is from the first time I watched a game on TV. It was the last
game he pitched before being put on the DL with an aneurysm. I think that game
was what made me a true Yankee fan. That's why I love David, I credit him with
making me fall in love with this team.

I also remember seeing him with the Mets and seeing several fans with cones on
their heads during the sports news one night. I distinctly remember saying,
"that's cute, his name is David *Cone* and those are the Cone-heads" (weird
memory huh?) lol

But my all time favorite memory is Coney's perfect game. I nearly threw a fit
during the rain delay cause I figured the game would be called off. And when
the last hitter (Orlando Cabrera) popped up to Brosius I started jumping up and
down. Then I sank on to my bed and began crying hysterically. That is what
Coney has always meant to me. And ever since Wells' perfecto, my one wish was
to see Coney pitch one, too.

Subject: Story About Cone..

I posted this somewhere else, but thought I'd share it w/ the list also...

K, during my brief 2-wk accounting trip that took me to VA, DC, and NY, I got
to meet several interesting people (accountants, of course). One of the
people I met had a client who was and still is Coney's marketing agent.
Anyway, he told me that during the 80s they had this banquet thing, and he
sat at a table w/ Cone and the marketing agent. All of a sudden, this woman
started screaming b/c a man had stolen her purse..so what did Cone do? He
got up, ran after the man at full speed, knocked him down and beat him up til
the man gave up the purse. The man was all bruised and beaten when Cone
stopped hitting him.

That's the story...I thought it was weird and funny...I cannot imagine Cone
doing that, guess it just shows how he's dedicated to doing whatever he's
doing, whatever that might be...

Hi everyone! Wow, so many great E-mails...thank you everyone for your
stories, I enjoyed reading them so much!

ansky24-- I thought your story was so sweet!! I cried too when I saw his
perfect game, I just loved to see him so happy! He is who totally made me
a Yankee fan, too. I mean, I'd watch Yankee games with friends every now
and then, and I had always had respect for them for their contributions to
baseball history...but if it weren't for Cone, I wouldn't be the Yankee
fan I am now...

Jaycee-- Holy cow...your story was very interesting!!! I got a kick out
of reading it...I can't imagine him beating the crap out of someone, but I
can *so* imagine him doing it for a good cause...hee hee! What a knight!
;)

Laura & Adrian-- Wow, what a cool article! Thanks for posting the
excerpt, now I want to read the whole thing! I guess I'll have to run out
and get the book...I love candid stuff like that!!

Oh! That article that was posted about the pitchers vs. hitters was very
interesting...I had no idea there was such a social conflict, but I can't
say it's very surprising, either...I know I've gotten very irritated at
the Yankee hitters from time to time, but that's because I'm partial to a
certain pitcher! So now when I do watch baseball I tend to be more of a
pitcher fan, and when they do badly I just feel upset for them instead of
angry. The points made about how they may play only once every 5 days or
whatever as opposed to playing everyday like the other players brought up
some good arguments, but still it's frustrating if a pitcher has a bad
outing because he has to wait 5 days before he can right it. Any other
player can have an off night, and then go out there the next night and
make everyone forget about the night before. I guess there are pros and
cons to both sides of the story...like the article said, I guess they are
just two different breeds...;)

Take care! ~ ~ ~ ~

Looks like he blew it again last night. He told the media after the
game that he wasn't getting the job done and that he was hurting the
team.

I feel bad for him. It is so hard not to be frustrated with him.
Whenever he used to pitch, prior to the PG, I used to feel like - here
comes a really good shot at another win, Coney's pitching. Now I'm
scared on his day, because I feel like - oh no, here comes another loss
- I hate when I feel that way about soomeone on the team, but it does
happen from time to time over the years.

Not sure what he should do. They all say he still has his stuff, but he
is having trouble with his location. He gave up 6 runs last night
(might have been only five if Jeter made that one play but that's
questionable).

Cone also said something to the affect of - I'll either start pitching
better or I'll pitch himself off the team.

I think he should volunteer to go down to Columbus or Tampa for a few
weeks to work out whatever the problem is with Billy Connors. When
Roger was on the DL he went to Tampa and I'm sure they worked on what
was wrong with his pitching at that time. Maybe that is what Cone needs
to do. No shame in taking the steps to fix what is partially broken.

I don't know who wouldn't be frustrated with him. It almost makes me cry

I think he should work in the bullpen a bit and than try some relief pitching
before returning to starting. He's gotta work more on his breaking ball and
use a bit more of his fastball. JMO.

Hello everyone...Yes, our Cone is still struggling, and it is very hard
watching him do so. I really don't know what the best thing to do would
be, I have mixed feelings about the bullpen and the minors, but maybe that
little vacation to Tampa like Kris suggested could help if it aided Roger
in any way. It really is comforting though to know that Torre continues
to believe Cone's stuff is still good and that he still has the ability to
win. He said something about how he's still striking out batters, and if
he had lost it, then he wouldn't even be doing that. I see a lot of truth
in that. I still don't think Cone has been pitching that badly, however
when he makes a mistake it's just a really big one unfortunately, like 2
and 3 run homeruns. I just hope for his sake he can get past this, I hate
to see him so unhappy with himself. I know it's difficult to not be
frustrated with his performance right now, but don't give up yet! He will
be starting again soon, and hopefully it will be a successful one...

Subject: Re: Cone loses another one...

We've been discussing Cone on the New York Times Yankees forum (forums.nytimes.com). I responded to a couple things said by other posters today. They really express my feelings about the situation:

Downtown:

"Cone isn't strong or big enough to use the splitter and fastball exclusively. If he doesn't have a slider and curve, he won't survive past the 4th."

Though it was by no means exclusive, that's what David Cone was from 1995-1997. Fastball/splitter and his other pitches were second-tier. Then his slider regained its old wickedness in 1998 and he was fastball-slider again like the old days.

Actually, Kid raises a good point. When Cone moved to the right side of the rubber, he made the switch then. Now he's back on the left side, and it might make sense to him to be fastball-splitter again. See Burrell hit that low-and-away slider for the three-run homer? He doesn't hit that pitch if Cone were on the right side of the rubber.

-

One thing that really bugs me is the inconsistency and uncertainty of his motion that matches the inconsistency and uncertainty of his pitching. He's just not hesitating consistently. Cone is a much better pitcher when he has that little hesitation after he picks his leg up; it helps his rhythm and keeps his delivery constant and well-paced. He had that kind of hesitation against the Mets and White Sox, but since then he hasn't really used it.

His command is so much better when he hesitates. Why doesn't he use it all the time? You know what I think? I think he's so focused on pitching on the mound that he forgets about it. It leaves his mind.

When he uses that hesitation, he makes few mistakes, especially with runners on base.

I wish someone would tell Cone to go back to his old over-the-head windup. In 1997 he went back to it, holding his arms over the head from the start and then moving them down to the set position while he turned sideways and picked up his leg. What that motion did was create a really nice rhythm (and a needed hesitation as his knee reached its apex). When he dropped his leg and drove forward, his command was usually terrific.

He was so extraordinary at finishing off hitters (they hit .133 off him with two strikes) that he finished with 222 strikeouts in 195 innings and a dominating ERA with opponents batting .218 off him overall and slugging only .332 off him.

He was both dominating and consistent because his rhythm was consistent.

He didn't use the over-the-head windup in 1998, but after he recovered from his surgery he was terrific again. He was still able to maintain that rhythm with that slight hesitation (sometimes it was more than slight!).

Sadly, for much of last year (especially late in the season), his hesitation and motion were not nearly as consistent. He compensated for the utter wildness with terrific stuff, but even so his numbers were near or at career worsts. His 3.44 ERA was not far from his worst of 3.57 (1995). His strikeouts dropped to their lowest frequency since 1995 and his walks rose to the highest frequency of his career. His WHIP (1.31) was the worst he had ever posted. He was more vulnerable to the home run (21 allowed) than ever before.

Most disconcertingly, both his on-base percentage allowed (.322) and slugging percentage allowed (.375) were career-worsts.

Now it's 2000, and his command hasn't really improved, especially with runners on base. Unfortunately, his stuff hasn't been nearly electric enough to compensate. For a pitcher with legendary consistency (look at those "bad" career-low numbers above), a season like this never seemed possible.

He's not hesitating. He'd go a long way towards becoming David Cone again if he was. I really wish he'd go to the over-the-head windup.

--------------------------------------

 Llbrooks:

"The Liberthal pitch again rolled."

It was a fastball. Fastballs don't roll.

Outside of that, I agree. Cone got four runs, and if he were pitching like himself, it would be enough. But it is ludicrous to say, "Hey, Cone got 8 runs." He did not give up the grand slam to Abreu, and the Yankees scored the four runs which eventually made the game close again after he left. When he left, the Yankees were down by two.

Cone's fall hasn't been natural. I mean, it's artificial. It just isn't right.

I'm convinced that it can't just be chalked up to age. He went 9-4 with a 2.65 ERA through the perfect game, and since then he's something like 4-13 with an ERA in the high-fives. That just doesn't naturally happen.

Another sign: his good innings are really good. He's not just fooling them when he has good innings. He's actually getting them out and making them look bad at the plate. He's Jaime Navarro when he's bad and David Cone when he's good, not Jaime Navarro when he's bad and Mark Gardner when he's good.

He hasn't had trouble striking out hitters, and he makes a heck of a lot of good pitches each game. But when he makes a bad pitch, it leaves the ballpark. It seems that whenever a hitter or two gets on base, some demon takes control of his arm and makes him throw a poor pitch. And it always leaves the ballpark.

He's made too many good pitches and been too good in his good innings to think that he's just wasting away. As Peter Gammons said, "I wouldn't bury him yet."

Another thing I just thought of: he's averaging around five and two-thirds innings per start. That's incredible for someone with his record and ERA. I don't know of any pitcher in memory with numbers like he has with so many innings per start.

Torre is a fairly quick hook, so don't chalk it up to that. I think it is another sign that his numbers really don't reflect the whole story.

Gammons says that Torre will probably give Cone 4-6 more starts to prove himself. Let's give them to him. As bad as it looks now, I think there's a chance we might see dramatic improvement.

Hey, guys! I forgot all about this! I have a link that you can use to listen
to Cone's perfect game on Realplayer! I'm not sure how long this link will
work, but as of now it's still functioning!

It's a tiny-sized link (95 bytes or less than a tenth of a kilobyte) and
will take almost no time to download. It's just a shortcut that takes you to
the server that has the perfect game on it. I saved it when I first listened
to it a year ago.

Just download it and double-click it and it will play on Realplayer
automatically! If you want to save it for posterity, hook up your sound card
to your stereo and record it on audiotape! That's what I did!

I have a question. Does anyone on this site tape Cone starts? I've been
taping Cone's starts regularly since 1997 and irregularly since 1995. Does
anyone want to trade old Cone starts with me? I love saving his games on
tape and am always looking to get as many as I can. There's so much I
haven't seen of him. I'm open for trades!

Enjoy the perfect game on radio!

just pan down and read- David's quite the guy.  Wish I lived in NY!!! I would certainly be at Mickey Mantel's after the game

enjoy!!!

btw- I would love to get a copy of David's perfect game on video.  I trired calling around- Modell's, website, etc.. no luck

does anyone have any suggestions???

thanks and have a great day

Forget David Cone's lousy record on the mound. When it comes to charity appearances, the Yankee pitcher still delivers. Following tomorrow's game against the Tigers, Cone will serve cocktails at Mickey Mantle's to benefit children with cancer, as well as the fight against SIDS. Teammates expected include Derek Jeter, Tino Martinez, Bernie Williams, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Shane Spencer and Jeff Nelson.

Laura,

One thing you or someone else could do is write or telephone FOX-5 (WNYW), the FOX affiliate in New York. They broadcasted the game, so they may have the legal right to sell their broadcasts. It wouldn't hurt to try. Here's their contact information:

FOX 5 WNYW
205 East 67th Street
New York, New York
10021-6099
212-452-5555

Let me know how it turns out!

Good morning

my sister sent me this.  I don't know about the rest of you but I have ordered on Amazon.com (back in early April) a book that is suppose to be titled "Pitcher Perfect" (about our David)- of course it has not yet been published so I am on a waiting list.  Apparently, they have now changed the title??... scroll down and read for yourselves.

Now to change the subject... I don't often post on the y.website altho- that's where I found out about the court (duh!) but I did notice and have read posts about the forum gathering for this saturday's game.  I don't know if any fellow court memeber is attending that game but do me a favor (if you are going),  That is the day our Coney will be returning to the mound... Please scream and yell and cheer very hard for him.  I will be sitting at the ESPN sports bar in Chicago looking for you all!!!(black out on direct tv that day):-(((

Have a great day!!!

Strikes Against Cone Book

No one's rooting for David Cone to climb out of his pitching slump more than editors at Warner Books.

The publishing house has laid out something like $600,000 for author Roger Angell to deliver a Cone bio titled "Game Face" next May. A publishing insider says Warner brass are starting to worry that readers may cool on Cone.

But Angell isn't sweating it.

"The book is a work in progress," says Angell, who says that Cone suggested he turn his New Yorker mag profile of him into a book. "I'm pulling for him. Not for the book's sake but because we're friends."

Hey everyone...Wow, a lot of stuff to address..! First of all, I'd like
to thank you all for your input on the list! I enjoy reading all of your
messages, and it is great to see such loyal support for Cone...

Laura-- Thank you so much for sending us all those articles and little
tidbits, I really appreciate it! With the charity bit, I didn't know
whether to smile or cry...I mean I think it is so wonderful that even
after all he must be going through and everything that is on his mind, he
can still take time away from himself to help others, he really is a good
person. About the book, a-- I didn't know you could already order
it!...and b-- just the mere thought of "readers cooling on Cone" just
burns me. I can't believe that would happen just because he is struggling
right now, though some people just really surprise you sometimes. I can't
wait for the book to come out, I think it will be great reading and I'm
excited that I know I can order it now! Too cool! In the article it
mentioned Cone saying to use his New York mag profile for the bio...and if
he means the article that was printed last year, here is the link to said
article for those of you who have not read it:
http://www.newyorkmag.com/page.cfm?page_id=2138&position=1

Aaron-- Also, thank you for the SI article...it was a very good article,
as heart-breaking as it was to read!! :(

Ally-- As always I adore your messages...Your special memory letter gave
me a great warm-heart moment, and I agree with you about not wanting Cone
to bounce around as a relief pitcher, and to retire as a Yankee. That is
just how it should be, for it to be any other way just isn't right.

Gerald-- Thank you for the Perfect Game link! I'll have to put it on the
site once I get the perfect game page working. Also thank you for the Fox
5 address, I hope it works out!

Now today's game...I am very upset for Cone! He pitched pretty well,
threw a good number of strikes and got a lot of guys to ground out and fly
out. He still gave up a homerun which is a habit he needs to break, but
still he only gave up 3 runs in his 6 innings, and he only walked 2, which
I thought was fabulous! To me I think this shows that his control is
strengthening and that he still has the ability to pitch well. I am just
so frustrated that the bats couldn't hit more off of a guy with an ERA
over 9, but mostly I'm frustrated at the bullpen...Cone may not have been
able to get the win, but he surely didn't deserve that dang loss! I hope
he feels better about his pitching at least, surely he knows he did pretty
well...

The page has been updated...sorry about the lengthy letter!! I hope I
didn't bore anyone! ;)

Take care~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Was I mad at that game!!!!! The Yankees even scored ENOUGH runs for him to
win, and he STILL gets pinned with the loss even though that bullpen decides
to walk 9 guys; wonder if it would've been different had Cone stayed in for
the 7th inning. Unfortunately, even though on a normal day he would've
gotten the win handily (especially with the way the Yankees are playing as of
late) he's now 1-9, and has surpassed the infamous Andy Hawkins of the world
for the longest dry spell ever. Ick. But I guess we have to look at the
brighter side... at least he lowered his ERA considerably... and at least we
KNOW that he CAN still pitch effectively. Maybe it's the team's problem, and
less his...

Oh and KC, thanx for the article on Coney! It's exactly the kind of bio I
was looking for.

Here's to next time,
~Pen~

Karen,

I saw the MSG postgame show after the game. Cone, in his interview, was in as bad a state as I have seen him. I've seen him in a comparable state only three other times: after Game Five of the '95 Division Series, after his aneurysm diagnosis in May 1996, and after he found out that he wasn't going to be able to pitch again in the 1997 postseason.

Here is a transcript of what he said, though it only tells half the story. His mannerisms and the expression on his face betrayed the fact that this is killing him:

Michael Kay: "David, what's your review on how you pitched?"

Cone: "Wasn't good enough, Michael."

Kay:  "It looked like you might have had Canseco struck out. Did you feel you did?"

Cone: "There's always borderline calls in the course of a game. Some go your way, some don't."

Kay: "When you left the game, you were down 3-2, obviously you want to win a game. But do you look at it in increments of improving, that "Gee, this is better than the last start and the start before that?"

Cone: "No. No, there's no solace in losing. Not at all."

Kay: "You seemed to change your delivery a little bit, almost El Duque-like with the high leg kick. What was that trying to accomplish, what did that do for you?"

Cone: "Searching. Still kind of in search mode. Trying to find something that works."

Eddie: "Did you feel better today about your performance?"

Cone: "No, I lost, Eddie. I don't feel better about it at all."

As you can see, Cone, who is always very articulate and gives complete answers, was blunt and short. He seemed like he was on the verge of tears, judging by the tone in his voice.

Here is what a visibly despondent Michael Kay said after they played the interview:

"You saw David Cone there. David Cone is one of the best athletes in New York, in any sport, in dealing with the media, and he answered every question, but he certainly wasn't expansive on any of them. Short answers . . . it's crushing him inside, and I don't know how he's taking it internally . . . I know it's really killing him."

"The quote he had in the papers today and what he said to all of us yesterday, it really tears at you. If you're covering this sport and you're a fan of this sport, you're a David Cone fan. I know we're all supposed to be objective and down the middle, but I think everybody wants to see David Cone do well. He helps us do our jobs as well, and when he said, 'I never wanted to go out like this, I never wanted to embarrass myself as a Yankee, or go out of the game this way,' it's heart-tugging, it really is."

"The guy still has stuff, but for some reason he's not winning. He's striking out people, and that's what the Yankees hang on. The fact that you strike out people shows that you still have stuff, but he's giving up long home runs, the home run to Greg Vaughn today was an unbelievable shot, he keeps giving up first-inning runs, 11 now over his last 7 games, a lot of home runs in the first inning, as well. Something's there, the Yankees have to tap into it, and they have to get him a win somehow, just to get him over the mental hump."

--

I'm writing this e-mail at 3:30 in the morning, because I couldn't get a wink of sleep tonight.

I feel so bad, because I know he feels even worse than I do.

I think he just needs a single, solitary win. Just one win, and we'll all feel better. I think one victory could completely turn things around.

In the meantime, I'll have to comfort myself by watching some of his old starts from years past.

I'm not going to give up on him.

http://www.geocities.com/coney36_nyy/

Hey everyone! I am sending out this special note to let you all know I
have *finally* finished and posted the Cone biography on the site! Just
click the biography link on the home page and it should take you there...I
hope it is to your liking...!

DC-- Thank you for transcripting that interview here...As sad as it was to
read, I'm still glad I got to read it. I just hate seeing him go through
this, I really do, words cannot even express how I feel about it all...I
just want to see David get through this, just like you all do. I should
have known he would still be upset over the loss even though his pitching
was by no means bad, I guess it was just wishful thinking on my part
hoping he would at least be somewhat consoled in the fact that he had a
good performance. I agree that he just needs a win...one dang win and I
think that'll be enough to pull him out of this...I know he can do it, and
I'm with you in never giving up on him...:)

Laura-- I hope you have a wonderful time in Minnesota, though I'm so sorry
you'll miss Cone's start! I really wish I could go, I'd love to just hop
into your suitcase! haha! Anyhow, you have a good trip, and we can't wait
to hear about it when you get back! I'm thinking I can make it to Kansas
City in September, though...we'll see...!

Penguin-- Glad you liked the article! I think Ally actually sent that my
way once upon a time, so she's the one to thank! ;) I thought it was
excellent, myself...;)

Oh...and P.S.-- my name isn't Karen...! ;)

Take care! ~ ~ ~~ ~

Subject: ok here we go again....

Good afternoon all....

Well, tonight is another start for our David. Let's see in the past 3 days
the Yanks have scored over 20 something runs right??? Do you think their
bats will be cold tonight??? Will it be the usual "no run support" thing.
Sorry I am being so cynical here but would really like to see him have a
win. So again, I am sending out positive vibes to our David. When I see
him tomorrow, I'll ask him if he got them;-))

Tomorrow is the big day- off the Minnesota I go, camera in tow of course,
but unfortunately, don't have a digital camera so you computer gurus will
have to tell me how to post them ok???

Chi-town thanks for your e-mail, been kind of busy- I'll write you when I
get back. Speaking of Chi-Town- her forum trip sounded just totally
wonderful. What do you think guys.... should we do a coney's court party.
Kinda of silly I know, but maybe we could shoot for the Kansas City game. I
don't know- we could do it for our webmaster. Get it?? KC in KC going to see
Coney who's from KC. Think about it. We still have time to do some
planning. Might be a big distance from our NY friends, but maybe not so
much for those of us who live in the middle of the country!!!

OK guys... wish me luck this weekend. And go Coney!!!

Have a great day
Laura
