Once on the hill, Cone continued to inject the undermanned Red Sox with the energy from his youth.<!ENDSUMM!><P> In the process, he continued to bring himself back to life, too.<P> With Cone contributing 5 stable, scoreless innings, the Red Sox defeated the New York Mets, 3-1, before an assembled 42,219. The win moved the stubborn Sox back within a half-game of the first place New York Yankees in the American League East standings. The Yankees lost, 11-1, to the Florida Marlins last night in Miami.<P> For Cone, the victory was his fifth straight since a May 23 loss to the Yankees and marked the eighth consecutive time the Sox have won a game the right-hander has started. The team's .727 winning percentage in games pitched by Cone is better than their record behind any other starter - Martinez included.<P> On paper, it all looks very much like the stuff of an ace.<P> ``I do feel like the team is not only looking for me to be a leader but to come through for them and win some big games,'' said Cone, who at 5-1 now has more wins than he did during all of last season (four) with the Yankees. ``That's a nice feeling.''<P> Said reliever Rod Beck, who contributed a scoreless eighth inning after Rich Garces took the ball from Cone in the sixth and pitched a scoreless 1 innings: ``Obviously he's done a lot for us. He's also a veteran presence in the clubhouse that commands respect. The guy's got five World Series rings. He obviously knows how to get there.''<P> Six days after they last held a lead, the Sox (finally) struck first despite being held hitless by Mets starter Kevin Appier over the first four innings. Manny Ramirez belted an Appier slider over the 358-foot sign in right center for his 27th home run of the season to lead off the fifth, giving the Sox a 1-0 advantage.<P> An inning later, the Sox extended the lead to 3-0 with a rally aided by Cone's contribution. After Lou Merloni reached on an error by Mets third baseman Robin Ventura, Cone sacrificed Merloni to second. Jose Offerman followed with an RBI single to left and advanced to second on Joe McEwing's throw to the plate before another single, by Scott Hatteberg, plated Offerman with the third and final Red Sox run.<P> Cone left the game four batters later after allowing a one-out double to McEwing in the bottom of the sixth, but not before exhibiting a familiar hint of grit. After McEwing stole third, Cone struck out Edgardo Alfonzo, leaving the Mets at 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position to that point. For the year, opposing batters are just 11-for-55 against Cone in such situations, a paltry .200 average.<P> Said Cone: ``I really have made better pitches in jams this year than last year.''<P> Just the same, Cone's final contribution of the night was walking Mike Piazza on four pitches, a development that brought the tying run to the plate in Ventura and prompted Sox manager Jimy Williams to summon Garces. Making his first appearance since coming off the disabled list, the hefty reliever walked Ventura to load the bases before striking out Todd Zeile to end the inning. Naturally, Cone was among those to greet Garces when the reliever returned to the dugout.<P> The Mets scored their only run on Mike Piazza's colossal home run against closer Derek Lowe in the ninth, but that ultimately did little to tarnish the performance turned in by Cone.<P> ``When I was with the Yankees, we always looked at the Red Sox as a team that would not go away. They always were a team that we looked at and feared,'' said Cone, well aware that Martinez' injury is not the only one through which the team has persevered. ``I don't think this team is going to go away.''<P> Clearly, Cone has no intention of going away, either.<P> <P><A NAME=related></a> |

OK, a little footnote to tonight's game. As you guys probably know, David's been climbing the list of career strikeout leaders, and going into tonight's game he had 2,581, according to ESPN.com -- good for a tie for 18th place all-time with the legendary Bob Feller. Add in tonight's 6K's, and that comes to 2,587 K's ... not only passing Feller, but also Warren Spahn's 2,583, to move David solely into 16th place! Ah, happy day... the Mets lost, Coney won; if only the Yanks hadn't gotten slapped around by the Florida Fish, all would've been perfect. ~PEN~ T<:) |

Hey everyone! :) Sorry I haven't been writing much recently, I've been pretty busy with my new job! Anyway, it was great being able to see Coney pitch so well last night...wasn't this his first game pitched at Shea since he was a Met? I never thought I'd be wondering when Red Sox games were on national TV! It's a bit sad reading the articles that say he'll probably retire after this season...I wish the Yankees hadn't given up on him! :( But I also think that perhaps he needed this fresh start (and I think Kerrigan is a miracle-worker) to be able to come back. I have purchased some tickets to the games against Boston in September. If it works out that Coney pitches one of them, then I'll go...though it'll be with mixed emotion... B "yay David!" G :) |

http://www.geocities.com/coney36_nyy/
Hi everyone!!!! Of course I'm writing to let you all know the site has
been updated...(sorry for the delay!) but I also have to say, "Wow!! What
a game!!" David was *awesome* last night!!! I was listening to the game
online as usual, and everytime Piazza and Ventura came up, I got
nervous...but David just struck them out like it was nothing! And what
about his sac. bunt?? That was just the icing on the cake! WEEI also
talked with him after the game for awhile, it was a great interview! He
talked about how it felt great being back at Shea, how it brought back
memories but also how he's felt like he's come "full circle." (as quoted
in many of the articles) He also compared returning to Shea with
returning to Yankee Stadium, and he said at Yankee Stadium he is a lot
closer with those guys, he still knows a lot of them, whereas he hardly
knows any Mets real personally, except for John Franco. They also talked
about Angell's book...I guess Angell was on the pregame show. (which I
missed, dangit!) David was asked if there would be another book at the
end of this year and he laughed and said, "Well..I don't know about
THAT.." LOL! He also said how it feels really good that the Red Sox have
won his last 8 starts, and that he is having a blast playing in Boston!
He sounded so *happy*...it was just wonderful! That was a main goal this
year for him, to have fun, and that's exactly what he's doing..and he is
doing it *very well*! :) I hope this continues for him, it's making him
so happy and no one deserves it more...:)
Well I've rambled on long enough...thank you everyone for the
articles...and "Go, David, go!" :) :)
Take care! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

| Subject: | David's win! |
Hey everybody! Last night was the BEST game I've seen him pitch at in person. He was phenomenal. And he looked cute as ever, although the red socks on his feet really bothered me! In fact, nearly half of Shea was filled with Red Sox fans, and while it was nice to hear so many people cheer for David, it was WAY creepy for me as a Yankee fan to be surrounded by them. I waited by the players entrance after the game, but no one came out to sign autographs. I did however get to see all the Mets drive off in their personal cars. Armando Benitez drives a Benz with a fancy computer up front, and Rick White drives and SUV with little video screens hanging in front of all the seats. That was way cool. I stood right next to the Boston bus as it drove away, and I'm pretty sure I saw David in one of the windows. And, as I suspected, all I could do was point and stare with my jaw on the ground! I don't think I'll ever be able to get out the words to ask for an autograph if I ever got the chance. Anyway, I took alot of pictures, but my digital camara doesn't zoom, so I don't know how they cane out. I'll download them onto my computer when I get home Monday night, and if any are clear enough, I'll attach a couple for everyone to see. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!! Melanie |

Hi All :) Can't believe it's already been 2 years since he pitched it. As a Yankee fan it's even sadder to note that he is pitching tonight... in a red sox uni!!! I don't know for some reason it depressed me a little thinking about it today. Has there been any mention of his perfecto in NY today? Now that he is pitching for the enemy I would think not, but since I live all the way in Chicago I wouldn't hear if anything was said anyway. Can't wait to be heading for the big apple on Sunday :) Those of you going to the forum party this Saturday have a great time. So sorry I will be missing it again :( KC.. we must think about that coney's court gathering you mentioned, that could be fun :) Have a great day~ Laura |

Hey everyone! Well, David didn't get a win tonight...but he didn't get a
loss either, so that's good. :) He still did pretty well, only raised his
ERA by .03 points! And I know most of you are hard core Yankee fans, but
this is the 9th game in a row that David has started for the Red Sox that
they've won, and I'm sure that means a lot to him! Also, *duh* did you
all realize this is the 2nd anniversary of his perfect game? That's
pretty wild that he's pitched on this date for 3 years in a row, at least
I *believe* he pitched it last year...
Anyways, the front page has been updated...:) Take care! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

http://www.geocities.com/coney36_nyy/
Hi everyone!! Well, it was another great game from David and the Red Sox!
Again, David pitched quite well, but the Sox also did their job by giving
him such great run support! I am getting ready to update the site, so be
sure to check it out soon! :) I decided to write this note first because
I *had* to let you all know about David being on Baseball Tonight! He
looked *fabulous* and as always, it was just so nice to hear him talk with
the media again. I think he feels pretty good, of course...and he also
gave props to Boston for giving him the great support and talked of how
they have made him feel very welcome. He was asked about the Yankees, and
he said that you can never underestimate them or take them for granted,
but that he feels Boston is making a good run, and it could get better
when Nomar, Pedro, and others come back. He was also asked about Boston's
chaotic clubhouse...if the players didn't listen or respect Jimy Williams
etc...and he said that he thinks those stories are pretty much old news.
They also mentioned Saberhagen, and how he and David haven't played on the
same team since they were like 18...*heehee* David seemed to be looking
forward to Sabes' start on Friday...:) It was a great interview...and
with the way ESPN replays things a few times a night, I'm sure they'll
show it again so anyone who missed it may still get to see it!
Okay, now I am going to update the site...then I'm going to catch the
replay of the game on NESN! *yay*!
Have a great week, and "Go, David, go!" :)
Take care~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

PS-- An article on espn.com says that David only threw 88 pitches (hmm
sound familiar?) yet the box score says he threw 91...either way, that's
pretty dang good, considering he made it to the 7th! He also left to a
standing ovation!! :)

Hey, thanks for the heads-up! Now, I hope you don't mind me venting a little...I considered posting about it on bb.com but decided it would be pointless. I saw a couple of posts from people there who think that Coney's resurgence with the Red Sox means "he obviously didn't give 100% for us last year" or at the very least "why didn't he care enough about the Yankees to get in shape for us?" Okay, I really don't understand that level of...I dunno, demonization? That some people assume the absolute worst of David now, that he didn't care even when he was with the Yankees. I believe it was in the Angell book that he didn't ever think of conditioning, etc, as that important, until last year proved otherwise? Of course I wish he'd have made that discovery before last season, for if he had, I'm sure he'd be with the Yankees now. But I never thought to question his commitment to performing well, to be a competitor. Besides, maybe, just maybe, Boston found a way to help him in a way that the Yankees couldn't. Maybe some people are just pissed that David didn't crash and burn again this season as they hoped he would... Sorry to drag people down, but I felt like saying something about this, without fearing that people would jump down my throat for it. Akino aka B "sigh" G |

| ::Pen jumps down BG's
throat:: (J/K) Seriously, BG, I'm totally with you on everything you say. The thing is, you KNEW that no matter what Coney did this year, fans would be on his every move. Should he have had another 2000, they'd be shouting "Hooray! Look how he's helping us! Didn't stay with the Yankees, now he's paying for it! Retire, you ****!" Instead, they're mad because his arm is what's been keeping the Sox in this pennant race... you realize that take away his 6 wins (and 1 loss), the Sox would be waaay out of this already. Instead, they're actually within striking distance still, and, until recently, still breathing down our necks. The only way fans would have been happy is if Cone had stayed with the Yankees or ::shudder:: retired. The reality of the situation, what we see, that he wasn't "all about the money," "a disloyal ingrate," yadayada, may be blatantly otherwise, but the fans on bb.com seem to have their mind made up, and, as I've stated quite often, like a Mets fan, nothing you say is going to change their opinions. I guess we'll have to wait until his first Old Timers' Day (let's hope at least five seasons down the road...) to win some of these guys back. 'Till then, screw them, Go David! ~PEN~ |

http://www.geocities.com/coney36_nyy/
Hey everyone! Yes, thanks Susan for the heads-up on Angell being on
MSG...how cool! I'm especially excited since I actually get to watch it!
woohoo!
Now my response to today's letters...oh you all know I have my thoughts!
:) First of all I'm glad I don't have the time to forum anymore...:P
Akino and Penny...great letters from both of you. I can't believe people
are still on David's case about last year and the whole Red Sox thing
yadda yadda...They need to GET OVER IT already! I totally agree with
Akino here, I think they're just all torked because he hasn't fallen flat
on his face and they can't laugh at him...so they're resorting to
anger-tantrums because <gasp> how dare they just admit they were wrong and
acknowledge his success like any other knowledgeable and civilized fan of
the game? Of course this is even more an issue because it is the Red
Sox...the "enemy," who just like Penny said are still in this whole thing
arguably because of him! These people who sneer at him for being in
Boston and actually succeeding are undoubtedly the same people who were
the very firsts to denounce him last year and wonder why the Yankees
re-signed him in the first place...and if he would have been re-signed,
they would have been the firsts to complain and wonder why the Yankees
would do such a thing! Furthermore...it is one thing to be upset at him
for leaving and going to Boston, and I can totally understand how a Yankee
fan can't really wish for his success because it would mean wishing the
same for Boston...but when people have to tap in and make judgements--poor
judgements--on his character and work ethic...that really burns me! I
believe with my whole heart that he has always, ALWAYS given 100% whenever
he has played, and I don't have a doubt in my mind that he LOVED being a
Yankee and was nothing but loyal to them. I know that a part of him will
always be a Yankee...just as a part of him will always be a Met and a
Royal...(not so sure about the Blue Jays..he really wasn't with them long,
though he did win his first WS ring there!)
About the conditioning etc...Akino you are totally right..and of course
those people who are griping about his not conditioning probably haven't
read Angell's book or have ever listened to the facts! People also griped
about him not working out over the offseason...which he did because he
thought it would conserve his arm! He thought wrong apparently, but his
heart was in the right place...it wasn't because he was lazy or didn't
care...last year wasn't harder on ANYONE ELSE but him, I am certain of
that, and it just irritates me how people can pass judgement like that so
quickly...:( Also I do believe that Boston has been able to help him out
where the Yankees couldn't. Kerrigan has worked very closely with
David...and last year, with Mel sick and everything, there just weren't
the time or resources perhaps. The Yankees were totally there for him
emotionally...Torre and everyone stuck by him and supported him
wonderfully...and his hiatus with Billy Connors in Tampa did seem to help
a bit before the mishap in Kansas City...but Kerrigan has paid very close
attention to David and has helped him work out the kinks in his mechanics
etc, and I'm sure the conditioning has helped, too... I do think it would
have been nice to see him go out on top as a Yankee...but who's to say
this new ending (which is hopefully far, far away :)) won't be even a
better one? David's happiness is certainly more important than some fan
ideal, at least in my opinion. :)
Now let *me* apologize for going off! :) Akino, I'm quite glad that you
felt you could express your thoughts here and feel comfortable that you
wouldn't get your head bitten off for it...we're always happy to hear from
you! :)
Have a good night everyone! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Hello everyone! First of all..I have to say, "Yay!" :) David had another
great outing yesterday, he struck out EIGHT (8) batters! Again I must
thank the Boston offense for supporting him so well, too! I think the
fans gave him another ovation, there is a really sweet picture that I
finally got up on the front page, so be sure to check it out! (Sorry for
the delay, I was out all day yesterday.)
Now on to the listbot problem...this is the last day we will be able to
send messages through listbot, but I do have the new list set up at
www.coollist.com. I will send everyone on this list an invite from
coollist, but if any of you would like to get a head start on it all, feel
free to go there and register! The archive information will still be
available on listbot until August 20th, and I do plan to download all of
the archives and place them hopefully on my site so people can continue to
see the great tradition we have all started!
Penny, I also wanted to thank you for sharing with us the wonderful things
being said about David over in the fantasy leagues! It's all so great to
hear! :)
Take care everyone, and I will hopefully see you all at coollist!!~ ~ ~ ~
