Under Construction Still: 2000: The Condors Dynasty birthed in 2000. Founders Jeff Surratt and Dan Kasper became friends in the early months of 2000 and in March as the weather got warmer, Jeff mentioned to Dan one day, while working at Burger King, that he wanted to play Softball this Summer. Dan said that he'd play and we started getting the idea of putting a team together. After getting the paperwork from the Iowa City rec-center, Jeff went over to Dan's place to discuss with him and his (then) girlfriend, Michelle, the details of putting the team together. On the roster sign-up sheet it had a blank spot for the team manager and Jeff asked Dan who was going to do it. Dan replied, "Why not you?" "Me?" Jeff asked. "Yeah, you're the one putting all this together," Dan said. Jeff was hesitant, but accepted being the team's manager. And then Jeff started looking for a team name. He was watching TV with Dan and somehow "Condors" popped in his head. The Condors were born that night. Jeff wanted to play for fun and envisioned a fun outing with friends both male and female. He started asking anyone and everyone he could think of and then realized that the number of girls had to equal the number of boys. The Condors struggled that season immensely. They were in the lowest league (which at the time was "C") and lost their first game 17-2. The second game they lost 18-1. The third game got better when they played Pen Pals (aka Shakespeare's) and lost 18-6, surprising themselves actually scoring 6 runs, and they heard Shakespeare's was the #1 team the year before. The whole season was a pounding though as they finished 2-12. 2001: A better season than 2000, as they started their first game with a loss, but the score was 11-10. The Condors faced adversity that year when Dan's girlfriend Michelle decided she wanted to play for the rival Shakespeare's team halfway through the season. Dan stuck with the Condors, but his future became unpredictable at that point. The Condors finished under .500 for the season, but found themselves and the secrets of the game that Summer. They finished 6-8 for the season and lost in the Tournament Championship game versus Global Attack in the lower part of the C league. They added superstar Matt Strabala at the end of the year. 2002: The Season of Victory, it was called before opening day. Dan Kasper stayed with the Condors as he and Michelle broke up for a short time, but then they re-united and again Dan's days as a Condor seemed numbered. Matt Strabala proved his worth in his debut full season. He played 3rd base as a left, and he hit .765 with 5 homeruns and won his first MVP with the Condors. The Condors started the season 7-0, to take first place for a week by 12-running the 1st place 6-0 Ground Round Team in the 7th game of the season. Unfortunately they dropped their next 3 games to finish the season 10-4 in third place. They were dropped by Dolls in the 2nd round of the playoffs as the Condors were short-handed in another close game. 2003: The inevitable came and Dan Kasper was no longer a Condor. He fueled the rivalry the Condors had with Shakespeare's as Dan joined their team and even became their manager. With this the Condors add star Brock Killion to play 3rd base and Matt would head to shine in Left Center. Matt would win his 2nd MVP that season by hitting a crushing .792 and 9 homeruns. The Condors would face Shakespeare's twice in the regular season losing both heart-breaking games. The Condors would finish the season 11-3 in third place behind Shakespeare's and Dolls, but would fight their way past tough teams in the playoffs. They beat M&M's 8-7 in the first round, then came out on top in the Dolls game. In the Championship game, they played Shakespeare's again but Dan and Michelle were the victors, and the Condors would win their second runner-up award. 2004: The Condors enter their 5th season and their hopes were high. They had the best female roster in the league with stars Tiffany Tebockhorst, Whitney Soenksen, Erin Tebockhorst, and Trisha Shockley. And their male roster was super solid as well, with Jamal Zietlow, Frank Williams, Tyler Russo, Brock Killion, Jeff Surratt, and Matt Strabala. The Condors were the team to beat now as the Shakespeare's team would move up the CC division. The Condors again went 11-3 finishing in second place behind ACT. ACT would lose in the first round, and the tough Systems Unlimited Team was upset as well. McInnerneys provided all the drama in the playoffs for the Condors though. In a back and forth game, the Condors would have to fight and they had their most exciting playoff game ever. The Condors consistency and dedication would shine that Sunday night and they came out on top 22-18. Tyler Russo lifted them that night coming off the bench and with both of his at-bats, he belted two moonshot homeruns for 5 RBI's which proved too much for McInnerneys. The Condors 12-runned the 8th place Hometown Painting team and won their 1st Championship. 2005: |
