Commander Hawk was born in Virginia in 1907. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1930 and served two years as a junior officer in the battleship Texas. He volunteered for Submarine School at New London in 1932 and served as a junior officer in the submarine O-10. Then he was transferred to S-18, where he served variously as engineering, diving, and torpedo officer. He was made executive officer of S-31 in 1938. He was promoted and received his first command, the S-39, in May 1941, and was on the Asiatic station at Manila when the war broke out. After three war patrols in S-39, he spent a year on shore duty with the Bureau of Ships working with new construction submarines. In March 1943, Hawk was promoted to the rank of Commander. Currently, he is the skipper of USS Seahorse (SS-304) and the executive officer of Submarine Squadron 4.
CDR Hawk has been awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star.
