| Here is something that was in my local newspaper in the November 2002 edition: ______________________________________________ Invitation to apply for volunteer positions in Cambodia With the on-going development of Maharishi Vedic University as Cambodia's only rural based university, there are now several exciting opportunities for volunteers to make a contribution. 1. Accounting Teacher Term: 2. Marketing Teacher 3. Human Resource Management Teacher 4. Rural Devolpment Teacher 5. Computer Technician and Trainer starting 8 December 2002, for 8 months 6. Management Teacher 7. Agricultral Studies Teacher Term: starting anytime, flexible length of time from 6 weeks to 8 months. All positions require a relevant tertiary qualification, communication skills, good health and adaptability. Australian Aid for Cambodia Fund ______________________________________________ Well I thought to myself, that's something you don't see everyday. I mean, let's face it, the facts have to be told people! Now I am in no way trying to bag Cambodia, students in MVU, the printers of the newspaper etc. All I'm saying is that there is something ominous about this ad. I find it a bit strange that people are being urged to go and do teaching jobs in Cambodia while there is a short supply of teachers here in Australia (or in my state at least, Victoria). Because of teacher shortages, class sizes have gone up a lot. I think about 5 years ago, the average class size in Victoria was about 15 or 20 students per class. Now it's something like 25 or even in some extreme cases 30 students per class. Quite an increase in terms of sustainability. If you don't assure your security first BEFORE helping other people, than both of you could face ruin. That applies in this case. If we can't get enough teachers to run the schools here, then we can't spare any teachers to ...... |
