| I've recently been working at a law firm since it's the school holidays, and I've got nothing better to do. Sure, it might not be a very interesting job (putting files into boxes and the marking them off a checklist) but the pay is better than that of a fast food restaurant or department store. Anyone who's ever been in a law firm would probably know that there is always work to be done. And this is obviously tiring. So as I work there, I think to myself, why do they even bother? Well, there are many reasons. Money, to pay off the bills and the mortgage, a sense of belonging, a sense of doing something useful with your life and interacting with the co-workers around you. Recently I discovered another reason. Work is a hell of a lot better than staying home and watching the crap that on there! From where I live, there is nothing interesting to watch from the hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are a whole lot of things. You come across sitcoms that you know are so obviously bland and lame that they could not possible be put on at night. There are also dodgy cooking shows telling you how you can make mashed potatoes taste even better (by simplt putting bacon in it). However, the most torturous thing on at this time is the Midday Movie, put in this time slot for the very same reasons as the before mentioned sitcoms were. About a week ago, I watched a horrendous movie, one that was more worse than usual. Black River is a story about Bo Aikins, a writer who leaves Los Angeles to go live somewhere else. Originally, he was thinking about going to Seattle. As he drives there in his Mercedes, he goes into a small town called Black River. Here, he stops to get a bite to eat. As he walks to the diner, he marvels at how much of a perfect town this is. He gets to the diner and meets Mandy, a waitress who works there, and the mayor. He is told by these people about how he would love it here. Naturally Bo is confused and doesn't know what they are talking about. Little does he know that Bo can not leave the town. His car is interned by the police, the trains are not working and he can't by a new car since his bank accounts are being transfered from L.A. to Black River. He is desperate to leave the town, but he can't. Someone or something is not letting him. Eventually, after three quarters through the movie, we realise that someone named Peracles is keepint Bo in the town. Apparently, he is the spirit of the mayor's dead brother. How a spirit can do all that, I have no idea. This is just one example of how the movie makes no sense. Peracles's part in this is very very strange. He narrates in the movie on certain scenes, using very philosophical and insightful language. I've been a philosophy student for two years, and what Peracles sais was total crap. I suppose it was there to impress stupid people. He frams incoherant sentences that involve the spirit of the human race, the State and the use of force. In short, it's a big mess. Peracles also seems to know what everyone does and says by using telephone lines and radio waves. In once scene, when in desperation, Bo tries to run out ........ |
