| Date: 14 July 2004 Q. How do we know if we are going to hell or heaven? A. Jesus said: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) A jailer once asked Paul, "What must I do to be saved?" and Paul answered "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved." (Acts 16:30,31) Paul went on to say elsewhere: "If you confess with your mouth 'Jesus is Lord' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved ... for 'Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'" (Romans 10:9,13). Therefore, you can be sure you are going to heaven if you believe in Jesus, love Him, and desire to follow Him. Jesus Himself said, "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life." (John 5:24). Q. Who am I? A. You are a creation of God, made in His image (Genesis 1:26-27), designed by God to be in a special relationship with Him (John 17:3). You are not a product of random chance and blind evolution. The Bible says God knew you before you were born, that God was intrically involved in your growth in your mother's womb, and that God already had written down before you were born all the days planned for you (Psalm 139:13-16). You are special! Q. Does God answer our prayers? A. Jesus said: 'Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you ... how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!' (Matthew 6:7,11). But we must ask with the right motives. The Bible says, 'When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.' (James 4:3). You must also not have any conscious sin on your heart, else God won't listen to you (Isaiah 59:2). So if you first confess your sins, and then ask for something that God would agree with, you'll get it! Q. Why did god Di? And run a way? A. God (Jesus) died on the cross at Easter for our sins. The Bible says the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23), and we have all sinned (Romans 3:23). Jesus never sinned, and He died on the cross instead of us so that we could be forgiven! The Bible says: "For God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16) Jesus did not run away, however. When He died He was in the tomb, and after 3 days He rose again from the dead. Yes, after another 40 days He then went back into heaven, but He said this was for our good, because He would then send the Holy Spirit, our comforter, to be with us always and live in our hearts! (John 16:7-15). Q. Where did we come from? A. In Genesis chapter 2 we have detail about how God created humans. Man (Adam) was actually formed from the dust of the ground and then God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being (Genesis 2:7). God made the first woman (Eve) from a rib He took from Adam's side while Adam was in a deep sleep (Genesis 1:21,22). When the man saw the woman after he awoke, he said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman' for she was taken out of the man" (Genesis 2:23). All other people come from Adam and Eve and the children they had. Q. Who made earth and the other planets? A. The Bible says that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1), and that it was on the fourth day of creation God created the stars, sun and moon (Genesis 1:14-19). He probably made the other planets on that day as well. Q. How do you live A. The Bible says that every human has "the breath of life" in them, which is something special from God (Genesis 2:7). The Bible also says that Jesus Christ presently holds "all things together" (Genesis 1:17). All life comes from God. The Bible says concerning Jesus: Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. (John 1:3,4). This thing we call "life" is something very special indeed. Q. How did Jesus talk to us A. Jesus lived on earth as a human just like you and me about 2000 years ago (our calendar dates all start from the year zero when Jesus was thought to have been born!) So He talked to us just like anyone else talks to you! His first followers wrote down much of what He said, and we have those words still today in the Bible. The Bible is like a mini-library of lots of little books and letters, and you can read much of what Jesus said in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the Bible. Q. Why did they call Jesus god. A. They called Jesus "God" because He did things that only God could do! For example, He did great miracles like curing people who were blind, deaf, and dumb, and brought dead people back to life! (Matthew 11:2-6). He even told a storm to stop, and it stopped!! (Matthew 8:23-27) Perhaps the greatest miracle He ever did was never ever do anything wrong in his life (John 8:46), and also forgive people of their sins (Luke 5:20,21). Only God can do that!! Jesus also died for our sins, and then rose again from the dead after being 3 days in the grave (1 Corinthians 15:3,4). He was able to tell what people were thinking even before they said anything (John 1:47-49; Matthew 9:2-4). All these things and much more made many people call Jesus God (cf John 20:24-29), and Jesus himself never told people off for saying that!!!!! Q. Why was God born! A. God (Jesus) was born on earth for a few reasons. He was born to teach us more about God. Jesus said: "For this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world, to testify to the truth." (John 18:37) He was born to show us what a good holy life actually looks like. He was born so that through His life we could see and experience God face to face (2 Corinthians 4:6). And finally, Jesus was born to save us from our sins (Matthew 1:21). Jesus said he was born to ultimately die on the cross on our behalf, and then be raised again from death so that we could have new life (John 12:23-27; 10:10). |
