INSTITUTO D. JOÃO V

Located
in the western region of Pombal, and the northwest of the district of Leiria,
which constitutes a bordering zone, Louriçal is one of the 17 towns
which belong to the district. The town was established in 1166 and occupies
a 48km2 area. Louriçal is composed of 23 places being the population
of 5095 inhabitants, according to the Census of 2001 - 106 inhabitant per
km2 -. Population grew 5% in the last 10 years, which was superior to the
national average. In a place where the illiteracy tax is of about 23%, Instituto
D. João V appeared as a necessity for the population of Louriçal.
This institution has played a basic role in the personal and cultural formation
of the community since the ends of the 80s. During the school year 1987/1988
João V was created Instituto D., with a total of 320 pupils of basic
education. The name D. João V appeared as form to homage the monarch
whom it ordered to build the convent of the Louriçal. Given the importance
of the Louriçal marquises in the history of this region, its heraldic
symbol was chosen to represent the school. Within sixteen years, Instituto
D João V, a school of particular and cooperative education, turned
into a school of reference in the national panorama. In the first phase
special attention was given to the equipmen
t,
being made an investment, year after year, in the improvement of the installations
of the school, endowing it with all the necessary infrastructures to a good
development of the period of learning activity, in little more than 4 years,
the number of pupils quadruplicated. Currently the Instituto makes use of
rooms equipped for the functioning of many different subjects, among which,
laboratories of biology, chemistry, physics and informatics, a library,
a study room; a psychology cabinet; two bars and a canteen; a gymnasium
and a swimming pool; a bus terminal and an auditorium. The aim at this moment
is to bet in quality, providing an education with raised scientific and
pedagogical severity, continuing to privilege the bows however established
with the local community. Since its formation, the Instituto has promoted
the practice one of many modalities, giving special attention to the masculine
"inside football" and to feminine basketball. To the pupils they
are still proportionate situations where they can show their abilities in
the most diverse artistic fields. Competitions, expositions and festivals
had shown painters, singers, dancers and actors. In the present school year
the school counts on 132 teachers and 48 employees. There are 68 classes
fourteen being of the "2ºcycle", 26 of the "3º
cycle", 22 of the secondary education and 6 of the recurrent education
- evening lessons. The pupils are from Pombal, Figueira da Foz and Soure.
World-wide
day of the water
October the 1st was designated the World-wide Day of the water. This day
was marked by an exposition of works elaborated by students of the ninth
grade. The works were destined to alert the school community of the necessity
to preserve the water since it is a scarce resource.
Club of Mathematics
The Club of Mathematics, under the coordination of the teachers Guida Madaíl,
Teresa Pinto and Gina Salvador, has developed some activities exploring
the ludique aspect of this subject. There innumerable activities had been
made, as for example the construction of geometric games, games used to
explore some contents, etc. Students also participate in decorating the
rooms of Mathematics.
Club of Astronomy
The Club of Astronomy, directed by the teacher João Pedro Oliveira,
developed many activities, destined to the pupils of the regular and recurrent
education. There were conferences, expositions during the Cultural Week.
The aim of this club is to show the instruments used in the astronomical
field and whenever possible to comment the astros.
European club
Trough the school year, the European Club, under the responsibility of the
teachers Teresa Cravo and Nuno Rasteiro, participated in some meetings for
the Comenius Project in schools of Italy and United Kingdom. The pupils
had had the chance to exchange experiences with Finnish, Italian and English
colleagues. For future exchanges, they had already started to establish
contact with a Greek school.
Club of the Forest
The Club of the Forest, under the coordination of Carla, Gina Salvador and
António Joaquim, developed activities, destined to the pupils of
the 7th, 8th and 9th grades. Expositions, decoration of Christmas trees,
studies of some forest species, recycling paper, students learn how to behave
toward our environment every day. They intend to modify the school community,
to make them understand the urge of preserving our forests and to sensetize
for the rational use of the planet resources.
Club of the Press
The Club of the Press, under the coordination of Adelino Mendes, Antónia
Marques, Alexandra Pestana and João Filipe Soares, published during
the school year, three editions of the magazine "Space between lines".
The units of the magazine are free for the pupils of the Instituto.
Campingbeach club
The Campingbeach Club, co-ordinated by the teachers Clementina Pina and
Rosa Abreu, developed a set of activities: traditional games, aquatic activities,
learning the first techniques of rescue, visits to the Sotto Mayor Palace
and a lesson of dance - Hip-Hop, everything occurred in Figueira da Foz.
Club of dance
The club of dance, co-ordinated by the teachers Sónia Monteiro and
Ana Mesquita offered several sports activities. The students danced for
the "chestnut" party, the Christmas' party and for some football
games. Dances and music delighted everybody.
The computer science club
The computer science club is a space where the pupils have the possibility
to develop their appetite for the new applied technologies. There they may
elaborate works, scanning maps, surf in the internet or simply play for
a while!
The theatre club
This club is a space where the word and the body mix themselves with light
and sound to create fantastic scenarios. This year the club realized different
activities, dramatized texts and supported the Christmas' party as the cultural
week.
The Students Association
The Students Association has been, along its mandate, rendering some activities
in partnership with the nucleus of the Association of Students of the council
of Pombal. The association of our school elaborated, jointly with the City
hall of Pombal, a protocol that sought to help the students in the first
work offer, in apprenticeships, for them not to feel "alone in the
real world". This protocol has, also; the intentions of helping the
Associations financially, since they accomplish activities for the school
community.
They will accomplish lectures about "Sex and their Taboos" and
"Civism", for all of the students of the school.
Parents' Association
This year was the first of our Association. It was not necessary to sing
the congratulations or eat a cake to mark the date, but the collaboration
of the members of the organs was indispensable to execute the annual plan
of activities. Of the recreational and pedagogic organizations, promoted
by the Association, stand out the Dinner of Christmas, a formation destined
to the Educators on drugs dependency.
Study Room
In the Instituto D. João V the students have a study room where they
can accomplish their homework, study and read books, newspapers and magazines.
In this room, they are books, dictionaries, grammars, generic and thematic
magazines, school newspapers as regional and national newspapers.
The study room is available all day long during the breaks and there are
permanently teachers, who may help with the students' works.
"Game library"
To occupy the students' free times, the "game library" of the
school is a place where they can find few games (monopoly, trivial, ladies,
chess, fork, among others) and equipments: linked computers to the Internet
and multimedia games. All the materials and equipments are accessible to
the students that here can have fun in a different way.
Library
In the central block, the library of our school appears as a privileged
space for consultation and access to the information, frequent activities
/explosions, the students' own works, contribute to the dynamism of that
place.
