ABOUT US

So. What is this thing?

GLITTERDAMMERUNG! is a comics weblog.

Yeah, thanks, I think I got that one. What's a weblog (or "blog," for obnoxious slang short)?

Well, here's the long form response, but for the sake of brevity, we'll define it as a constantly updating journal, primarily consisting of links to the topic(s) that interest the blog's author. Most blogs are delightfully random affairs that express their owner's personality through diatribes, freaky Goth poetry, poorly-designed GIFs, and the like. Some are slightly more formal in their approach, picking a certain topic (for example, haikus about former presidents, though that's a bit of a flippant example) and sticking with it. This is one such blog; we're here to provide you with links to the most interesting comics content available on the Web, including news, interviews with creators, business reports, academic analysis of major and minor works, et cetera.

Now, here's an important point: We do not ask permission before placing most links. We just don't. We are, however, very receptive to anybody's concerns -- if, for some reason, you do not want the content of your site linked to from this page, and you notice that we've done so, e-mail us and we will remove our link, no questions asked.

And who the hell are you people, exactly?

We are Chris Conroy and Ross Binder. We're college students (Chris is at New York University in Manhattan, Ross is at the University of Iowa in Iowa City) with a great love of comics and a great amount of time on our hands. You'll certainly be able to pick up on our specific likes and dislikes by reading the blog, though we do strive to represent all that is notable in online comics culture; even if we do hate a specific facet of it, we try to recognize that it's worth showing to people anyway. This is a links site, but the whole joy of a weblog is in the personality factor, and we hope we have plenty of it.

If you really feel you need to know more about us: Ross doesn't have a webpage yet, but Chris maintains his own weblog, Not Enough Of Me.

What does "Glitterdammerung" mean?

It's the title of the last chapter of Grant Morrison's divinely-inspired comics series THE INVISIBLES. We just really, really like the word (and the comic, and the Morrison). As for a translation, it's based on the German word "Gotterdammerung" (the title of an opera by Wagner), which I believe means "Twilight Of The Gods." So it's "Twilight Of The Glitter." Which, really, doesn't mean crap. It just sounds nifty and poppish, two things we like in our comics and our weblogs.

You've probably noticed that it's a pretty long word. Therefore, abbreviations for this blog are required. We suggest GD! and GLIT!, both of which are pleasingly naughty in different ways.

How do I work this thing?

Well, the blog is pretty straightforward. You read it, and you click on the blue things called "hyperlinks," which I believe are copyrighted by Microsoft.

Here, however, is a spiffy feature you might not be aware of: You'll notice that those little arrows at the start of each entry are also links. Those are permalinks, designed to allow others to link directly to a specific blog entry from offsite. For example, if you think something we said is really funny, or if you think it represents everything that's wrong with the world, you might want to link to it from your own webpage. We grant you permission to do this, unexclusively; we'd like it if you dropped us a line and let us know, but you don't *have* to. All you have to do to get a link directly to that specific blog entry is click those little arrows -- and a new URL, linking to the archived location of that post, will appear in your browser address bar. Copy and paste that into a link on your site, and you're good to go.

As for the other areas of the site, they're also simple. The Archives collect every blog entry we've ever posted. You are, of course, welcome to browse 'em, link to 'em, et cetera, but do please keep in mind that the offsite links contained within them may or may not still be active, and may or may not still contain the material that caused us to link to them in the first place. This simply can't be helped, and we apologize. The world is an ever-changing place. The Links page is also pretty self-explanatory; specific caveats/instructions for using it will be found on the page itself. Soon, we'll be launching a tiny little online store so you can buy the stuff we ramble about, but that's not here just yet.

This looks like fun. Can I play, too?

Not yet, I'm afraid. We're still testing the waters on this thing to see if it's even worth doing. You're welcome to strike up a rapport with us -- send us some cool links, for example, though do keep in mind that we probably won't use everything that gets sent to us. Nothing personal. If you consistently send us excellent stuff, and if you seem like a pretty cool person, then perhaps we'll induct you into our secret club and you can start posting to GLITTERDAMMERUNG! as well. But until that day, please be content to admire our greatness from afar.

I mysteriously love you so much now! Can I brand my site with your Godly image?

But of course! A fine selection of banners for you:

That should be all you need to know, really. If you have any more questions, then please e-mail us and we will answer them. Enjoy the site, let us know what you think, and have a rockin' day.
