The Montreal
June 2001
The following is a transcript of an interview with Ryan Murphy of Montreal's own sketch comedy troupe the Bionic Yahoos.
CN : How did the Yahoos come to be?

YAHOOS : When the Canadian government found six Yahoos drunk in a ditch, they realized they
could rebuild them. They had the technology and the capability to make the world's first
bionic sketch comedy troupe. The Bionic Yahoos became better, stronger, faster and
funnier than they were before. Thats our story and were sticking to it.

CN :  How many members were you when you first started?

YAHOOS : The Yahoos began as 18 members, but 12 of our supporting players were tragically lost
to us in a wheat thrashing accident, leaving us with only 6 battle-scarred and jittery
                 performers
.

CN :  Who were the original members?

YAHOOS : The original core group consisted of Ryan Murphy, Shawn Baichoo, Ian Young, Andrew
Albert, Vikki Walker and James Senior.

CN :  How many are you today?

YAHOOS : Today we are a proud collection of six members.

CN : Who make up the Yahoos now?

YAHOOS : The Yahoos consist of Ryan Murphy, Shawn Baichoo, Ian Young, Andrew Albert, Vikki
Walker and Phil Harrison. James Senior regrettably left the troupe at the end of last
summer for the allure of the bright lights and big city of Toronto, and to our surprise he
actually decided to stay. Thankfully we were lucky enough to snag the musical genius of
Phil Harrison, who had been living and performing in L.A. when the troupe was originally
                 formed.

CN : How many performances have you done to date?

YAHOOS : To date the troupe has performed over fifty times, including shows at the Fringe Festival,
the Festival Macabre, a special for the CBC and multiple spots on MIX 96.

CN :  What are the long term goals for the Yahoos?

YAHOOS : When youre surviving on only Kraft Diner and Tang its difficult to think beyond
tomorrow, but ideally wed like to continue writing quality pieces and work towards
more radio recordings and possible touring. At the moment, our biggest concern is to
establish ourselves as dependable creative performers who will do absolutely anything to
                 land a show. Yes, a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g.
CN :  Is traveling as a troupe in the plans?

YAHOOS : Wed all love to travel and bring our comedy to the rest of the country and beyond.
Unfortunately, however, Andrews parole officer wont let him leave the province, so
well be performing locally for a little while longer.

CN : Any plans for television?

YAHOOS : Absolutely, were incredibly tired of just staring at our walls and listening to the radio.
Well probably start with a modest black and white model and then move up to
something more extravagant when the money really starts to roll in
.

CN :  Does everyone in the troupe perform stand-up?

YAHOOS : In fact, only three of us perform stand up. Phil Harrison has been in the racket for over
ten years, and recently came back from performing in L.A. and Las Vegas. Andrew
Albert is the troupes Just for Laughs Festival veteran and has performed extensively
throughout Canada and in the South. Ryan Murphy, meanwhile, has performed in living
                 rooms all across the world.

CN :  What kind of humor would best describe the Yahoos?

YAHOOS :The Yahoos offer accessible comedy that takes aim at pop culture, Canadiana and current
affairs. Unlike some other skit troupes you might be familiar with, our material is rapid
fire and character-driven. Most of our skits are under two minutes long and fall within
the theatrical tradition of exploring scenes through realistic and nuanced acting.
