CN : Have the Yahoos touched any topics which you may have thought earlier was taboo? If so, which ones? What was the overall reaction to those topics from the audience members and/or peers?
YAHOOS : Although, weve dabbled with drug humour and political satire, most of our material is fairly non-controversial.
As a troupe we always strive to give audiences exactly what they want in ways they never imagined possible. Failing that we usually just toss in a farting sound effect and it all seems to turn out well. CN : Have you run into any audiences that have not taken to sketch at all?
YAHOOS : Is the Pope catholic? Its a reality of comedy that when you perform often enough youll sometimes be thrust into situations and venues not conducive to your style of comedy. Were all professionals though, so when a show doesnt go well, we just blame the audience and go get ridiculously drunk.
CN : Is there one Yahoo that writes the majority of the sketches or is it more of a group effort?
YAHOOS : Writing is largely a collective effort among the Yahoos. Shawn tends to write a lot of our more animated pieces, Phil churns out a lot of our musical fare, Andrew writes some excellent character bits, and Ryan writes them all down since hes the only member of the group whos actually literate.
CN : How much practice is involved?
YAHOOS : The group meets once a week to congregate at Ryans place where they spend equal times rehearsing and making fun of his miniscule living space. They also meet for up to an hour and a half before every performance.
CN : If asked, how would you rate yourselves? (10 being the best....1 the worst)
YAHOOS : Naturally a subjective rating is difficult to come up with, so well have to give ourselves a strong 11, with room for definite improvement.
CN : Have the Yahoos been considered for the Festival 'Just for Laughs'?
YAHOOS : 'Just for Laughs'?
Not only have the Yahoos been considered, theyve also been picked for the Festivals prestigious Montreal show. Check them out on the evening of July 21 at Club Soda.
CN : What is the hardest part of belonging to a 'Troupe'?
YAHOOS : Probably the bizarre initiation rites. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find virgins nowadays?
CN : Have the club owners been receptive to the idea of a sketch troupe?
YAHOOS : Ernie Butler definitely has. Hes given us our own night every Wednesdays at the Comedy Nest and has been quite generous in booking us for a number of roadshows. The comedy Works have also expressed interest in having us headline a show in the near future.
CN : What do you think of The Montreal Comedy News On-Line? (Trick Question!)
YAHOOS : We absolutely love it! As a matter of fact we check it out every day just to make sure our pictures havent been removed. |
