Dusty knocked her addictions in nineteen-eighty-five, and moved back to England - making a temporary stop in Holland so her beloved cats would not have to be quarantined - where she was ‘rescued’ by The Pet Shop Boys and made a huge comeback with chart-toppers like What Have I Done To Deserve This, Nothing Has Been Proved, Reputation (dedicated to her cat Malaysia who was killed by a car), and In Private. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe had long admired Dusty’s beautiful and unique voice. "She hadn’t recorded for several years, but as soon as she arrived in the studio and began to sing, we knew that the greatest female singer Britain has ever produced was still on brilliant form." (Neil Tennant) "…I’m really grateful to The Pet Shop Boys…they had the faith in me that I didn’t have. They saw something in me that I was about to lose." (Dusty Springfield) The Pet Shop Boys opened new doors for Dusty, and a new generation of fans embraced her and her music. In the eighties, she was more daring and open with her songs. New opportunities sprung up for her. "Dusty was asked by Richard Carpenter to record a song on his album Time. This was to be his first project since the death of his sister Karen. Dusty was thrilled to be approached, and recorded the beautiful and haunting Something In Your Eyes." (White Lady Of Soul) Long-time friend Cilla Black also asked for a Dusty song for one of her albums, but she wanted to sing a duet. The pair recorded Heart And Soul, and even made a video to go with it.
Dusty’s next project took her back across the ocean to Nashville. A Very Fine Love was released in nineteen-ninety-five and included the beautiful Roll Away, a very honest, haunting song. Nineteen-ninety-five also found her making a docu-biography entitled Full Circle, with British Comedians Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders (the pair responsible for Absolutely Fabulous amongst other things). This camp, read-between-the-lines project is a lot of fun to watch. It includes hundreds of clips of Dusty performing during various parts of her career, many clips from her friends and peers, as well as a smart, witty interview with the lady herself.
