Advertisements have more of an indirect affect on the emotional development of an adolescent. A majority of the time, the ads that are directed towards adolescents want to portray a sense of being cool, of fitting in. Every kid wants to fit in, adolescents especially. If a child can't have what they see in the ads, then they can't fit in, and if they don't fit in they are bound to feel left out, lonely, and in some cases hopeless. This can lead to ridicule from other kids, and a multitude of other emotionally damaging circumstances. Being left out is emotionally damaging enough as it is, to have it progress to getting ridiculed and teased by their peers, just makes it all the worse. Emotional development is at its most crucial point of development in a human when they are an adolescent. In an indirect way the advertisements that an adolescent views can have a profound impact on who and what they will be when they are let out into society on their own. In extreme cases, if you look back on the lives of murders, when they were adolescents, correlations can be drawn between the ads they saw and if they were left out when it came to fitting in. Although this is not the case with all murders and delinquents, it is the case with most of them and shows a relationship between the two variables.

Of all the things in school that an adolescent can and will encounter, they are guaranteed to encounter one or more teachers throughout the day. Adolescents spend time with the teachers, learn from them, and talk with them throughout their day in school. Teachers have the ability, to have such a profound impact on the lives of students, that it can, in some cases, be like playing God. The things a teacher says, does, and how a teacher acts towards their students, can and do impact not only a child's intellectual development, but their emotional development as well. In a sense, a teacher has the ability to mold a student, to shape them into what they will one day be. There are some cases in which this can be very clearly seen; yet there are also cases in which it is not quite so clear. The ability a teacher has to mold, shape, and or influence a student's emotional development and who they are is entirely dependent on the student. The more emotionally attuned to life and things an adolescent is, the more easily the teacher can affect that student's emotional development. For an adolescent that doesn't care too much about emotions of their own or others, it is much harder for a teacher to do this. The more emotionally attuned to life and things around them a student is, the more likely it is that time spent in school and with teachers, can influence the emotional development of the adolescent. Since emotional development is so crucial in determining who and what an adolescent will become later on in life, the time they spend in school with teachers, and the interactions that they have with them, can have a dramatic affect on what their life will be like in the future.

Advertisements and teachers have an influence on an adolescents emotional development, teachers more so than advertisements. Yet, out of all the time that a student spends at school in their life, what has the most dramatic effect on their emotional development is their interactions with their peers. It is the reactions and acceptance or non-acceptance of one another that can have a huge influence on the emotional development of an adolescent. Fitting in, being a part of the in crowd, and making a name for one self can be considered every adolescent's goal in life. The clicks that form of the smart kids, the cool kids, the jocks, the geeks; Which ever one of these an adolescent belongs to determines how they are labeled by the other students that they go to school with. These labels are what affect the emotional development. In general most kids want to be seen as cool, and liked by their peers. Yet, if the kid happens to have more brains than cool, the likelihood of them being placed in the geek category is pretty high. Being a geek is not what the kid wants and then when they get called a geek by the others, or know that they are in that group, the kid feels bad about him/herself and doesn't feel like they fit in. Going back to the example of the murders from the section talking about advertisements, it's almost the same exact thing. In the movie 'Problem Child' the Bow Tie Killer says that he's "just misunderstood." Most likely the reason he is misunderstood, would be because he wasn't part of the cool crowd when in school. This would have affected his emotional development and caused him to want to get revenge on those that labeled him so poorly back when he was in school. This in turn, could very likely have turned him into the killer that he ended up being. The labels placed on adolescents by their peers when in this highly critical stage of development, can have a lasting impact on who and what the child will become when released into society as an adult.

I wish to make it clear that I am not saying that every bad thing that happens to a child emotionally is going to turn them into some kind of murder or bad person. Yet, I'm not saying it doesn't happen either. What I'm trying to show is the correlation between emotional development in adolescence and the probable future of a child. With emotional development being so critical at this period in a child's life, it is essential that those people and things a child comes into contact with be closely regulated and watched. The wrong kind of attention from a teacher here, or not fitting in with the cool crowd there, can have a dramatic impact on this part of development. In general we want our children to grow up and be healthy, happy, productive members in society. In order to assure this, we have to make sure that their emotional development is stable and constant so that the child does not go astray in their thinking and end up being a misfit of society or in extreme cases a murderer.
