What is a Lady Gouldian Finch?Lady Gouldians are a small (16 grams on average) grass finch from Australia. This little bird is endangered in the wild, with numbers fewer than 100 breeding pairs left. This little wonder that God himself truly did paint, could be extinct if not for the humanitarians of this world. They are a multi-colored bird with 3 major mutations- normal, blue and yellow. The normal is considered to have a black head, purple chest, yellow belly, and a green back. However the head color and chest color can change when bred with different color mutations. This makes them a bit more rare. The head colors will range from black, red and yellow (looks like a bright orange), while the chest colors are purple, lavender (mostly found on hens) and white. The blue is considered to have a black head, purple chest, white belly, and a blue back. However, like the normal, the head and chest color can change if bred with other color mutations. Head colors can range from black to straw (muted red). Chest colors are purple, lavender (mostly found on hens) and white. The yellow mutations are, well, not constant! Colors range on the head from black (which comes out looking white on a yellow body), red, yellow (can be considered orange on some) and gray. Chest colors are purple or white and the belly is yellow. Lady Gouldians can be easily kept with a number of other species of finches, like Zebras, Societies, and Owls. They can also keep reasonably well with Canaries. On a scale of 1 to 10, Gouldians are a relatively quite bird. 10 being the loudest like the Canary, Gouldians fall in the range of 1-2 with one exception. From about mid way through their second week of life, until they completely wean after fledging from the nest, their little voices aren't so little! They can and do, hit 15 on the Richter scale! CareCaring for these little wonders is easy and quite simple. All they need is a good size cage, good quality Finch seed, water with added vitamin and mineral supplement and some ground Oyster shell as grit. A small cuttle bone is also nice for added calcium. It also helps to keep their beak trimmed. As a treat, they really appreciate Millet Spray, sprouted bird seed, apples, oranges and other fresh fruits and veggies. They love it! You may also want to add a full spectrum, florescent light on the top of the cage. Your birds will be so much happier and healthier for it. Any other Question please e-mail @ [email protected]. |
