it doesn't really matter what i try to say, it always sounds like a pile of shit. but i'll have a go and see what happens. i first "met" rik mayall in the summer of '97. in vaasa, finland of all places, when i was visiting a penfriend of mine. we drank and watched a lot of video and among them were bad news, bottom live (#1) and mr. jolly lives next door.
i liked it a lot, but i wasn't hooked. not yet. after i came home again, i kept an eye out for these videos whenever i went into a video rental. i didn't find any of them at first, but in one place i found the young ones, and a little later i stumbled upon the dangerous brothers. that's when it happened. i realized that i was onto something deliciously vile here and my search for rik mayall stuff became more frantic, borderlining on obsession. soon my quest began to bear fruit as the video stack piled higher; kevin turvey, dangerous brothers, the young ones, bottom, bottom live, the new statesman, comic strip, rik mayall presents, bring me the head of mavis davis, guesthouse paradiso, on and on i dugand keep digging for the golden smile and abundance of expletives.
what i like about rik, apart from the obvious fact that he's insanely handsome, i might be imagening but what i feel to be a thing we have in common, namely a sort of refusal to grow up. a revolt against the stagnant image of grown-up and responsible, i.e. brainless, people. of course it wouldn't work if he wasn't so bloody funny. i don't think there is anyone as funny in the world, except of course ade and maybe rowan atkinson.
and whatever his real motives may be one thing is for sure. rik mayall has made my world a very jolly place to live in. THANK YOU RIK !!
