many is the time i have taken refuge from the slings and arrows of
outrageous fortune in the world of the cinema. often though there
is not much to see there so the second best option is the video shop.
in quality they lack but are in quantity greatly superior to the cinema. they also have a lot of older stuff and obscure and strange things
which are a pleasure always. if that should also fail, there is
always telly. not much on there as a rule (i only have one watchable station) but all rules have exceptions and i have stumbled upon some
things there worth watching.
i could sit hours upon hours watching the flickering images,
hearing the foreign voices and living in other worlds far away from
mine. and indeed i have, breathing in foreign airs and getting
hooked on faces and antics. lovestruck at times, sad and angry,
frustrated and disappointed, happy and bored. it's all there, and
here they are, the gods...
actors make a living pretending to be someone else.
mind you, so do politicians, but i think you'll agree
that actors are a lot more interesting than politicians.
if you don't agree i suggest that you go somewhere
else mate.
anyway, this is where i get particularly fervent in
my reverence, as i have mostly substituted films
and their heroes (and anti-heroes, of course) for
religion and clergy. i find in them everything i've got
and what i lack, harmony and humility as well as
agony and animosity.
they are far beyond me, in rainbow lights cast with shadows of the real world, but not so far that i cannot bask in their light and admire their form and nature. i can't touch them, they're too far away for that, but i can see them and hear them and in my heart i feel them...
