| After Jiang fled to Taiwan, the U.S. helped him set up a Nationalist government on the island of Taiwan. They called it the Republic of China. Meanwhile, the Soviets gave financial, military, and technical aid to the communist People's Republic of China. The relation between China & the Soviet Union had improved. In addition, the Chinese & the Soviets pledged to come to each other's defense if either country were attacked. The U.S. responded by trying to enlarge its influence in Asia. For example, the U.S. limited the Soviet Union's occupation of Japan to only the few small islands it had gained at the Yalta talks. The two superpowers had also divided up Korea into a Soviet-supported Communist north and a U.S. -supported south. The superpowers now tried to strengthen their power in Asia. The Cold War would continually existed until they made peace. |
