The college was established according to law (No.87) in 1987. Since then the college initiated building a sober-minded base by consolidating faculty, improving the library, and employing a scientific method in teaching that adopts analysis, deduction, and learning by heart. The college was linked to Al-Nahrain University after the University legislation No. 17 was issued in 1993, through which the college commenced a new stage in its history. Despite the adverse circumstances and difficulties, the college had succeeded during the last decade in establishing research laboratories of excellent standards. Well organized and target oriented research lines are now undertaken in all the departments. |

The college has gained recognition as a training centre for many postgraduate studies such as the Iraqi Board for Medical Specializations. The college provides assistance in mutual supervision and instruction of postgraduate M.Sc., Ph.D. and post-doctorate candidates from other related and corresponding colleges and universities.
The Kadhimya teaching hospital is the cornerstone in clinical teaching. It includes a total sum of 630 hospital beds delivering medical, therapeutic and nursing services to a large number of attendants ranging between 4-5 thousands/day. The College took its current name "College of Medicine/Al-Nahrain University" in April 2003. Formerly it was designated as Saddam College of Medicine being part of Saddam University which is now Al-Nahrain University. It is now annexed to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research while still retaining its special educational system and characteristics. |
