Some of the Wildlife: coyote,deer,bighornsheep,elk,grizzly blackbears,moose,bison,marmots, pronghorns,wolves. The best times to see wild animals in summer are early morning and late evening. The Hayden Valley and Pelican Creek are prime moose territory. Watch for bison in the Hayden Valley. Elk, bison, pronghorn and coyotes in the Lamar Valley. Bighorn sheep frequent Mount Washburn in summer. Watch for mule deer near Old Faithful. Antelope Creek is prime grizzly bear country. CAMPGROUNDS Mammoth Hot Springs, Old Faithful, Canyon Village, West Thumb, Grant Village, Fishing Bridge, Lake Village, and Bridge Bay, Pebble Creek, Slough Creek, Tower Fall, Indian Creek, Norris Geyser, and Lewis Lake. LODGES Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, Old Faithful Inn, Old Faithful Lodge, Snow Lodge, Canyon Village Lodge, Grant Village Motel, Roosevelt Lodge, Lake Lodge, and Lake Hotel. Congress established Yellowstone as the world'sfirst national park in 1872. Nowhere are there as many geysers as in Yellowstone. Magmatic heat powers the park's famous geysers, hot springs, fumaroles, and mud pots. The park's central portion is a 28- by 47-mile caldera, or basin. Lodgepole pine covers about 60 percent of the park and constitutes about 80 percent of the forested areas. The park's figure-8 shaped road system was designed to present the park's major attractions to travelers. OLD FAITHFUL GEYSER Its eruption intervals vary around an average of 78 minutes, ranging from 30 to 120 minutes. STEAMBOAT GEYSER The world's largest, erupts at irregular intervals of days to years.
