Who cares wheather you are a sophomore. Is your school really that segreated. No, it probably isn't. It used to be a problem but everyone got over it. Yea, ther are one or two people in the school that will talk, but then you always have haters Go ask him out.
You seem to be a shy person. Dont ask him in front of all his friends. Instaed, get him in passing period or something. When he is alone. Wait by his locker- or "accedintaly" walk into him. I know it sounds old but it works.
Another thing is, you wrote that he might spread it around school. Is this the type of guy you really wanna be with. You want a guy that would respect you. He really doesnt seem that type. But then again, it might be me.
