| Building the foundation for our studio was grueling work. We ignored recommendations to hire a backhoe to dig our trench. We felt that it did not make sense to hire a backhoe from town 20 miles away to dig a circular trench only 10 feet in diameter. We also believe in truly sustainable building methods and wanted to minimized unecessary use of mechanized equipment. It may take us longer to complete things, but in the end, the satifaction of completing the work ourselves is well worth it. So we happily grabbed our picks and shovels and dug away... Upon completion of our rubble trench, we gathered stones from our site and used the larger ones to form the base of our stone foundation. During this time, we also were in the process of completing our architectural drawing for our project (converting our hand-drawn sketches into properly formated CAD drawings). During the last week in August, Kristina's mother, Milena, paid us a visit and helped us with the stonework. |
