The Coaching Relationship

The Coaching Relationship

by COACH ROSA, MA, LMLP

The purpose of a coaching relationship is to provide you with unconditional support when you need it, remind you of your success when you forget, and keep you going when you begin to succeed. The process of coaching will help you with the following:

  • Plan to take the steps necessary to achieve your goals.

  • Plan to take the action necessary to achieve your goals.

This is promoted by providing structure. Structure provides a safety net, without it we often struggle before the winds of confusion. There are several types of structuring methods used in coaching. Among these are:

  • Systems Check-the coach will verify your organizing system for mail, bills, clutter, nutrition, and many other aspects of your life. This is important as it can often get in the way of other more important things.

  • Planning and Organizing Tools-Day Planner, Notes, Daily Checks, To-Do Lists, and other methods one can use to maintain an organized life.

  • Clarifying Goals and Values-Goals based on inner values are exciting! A coach asks questions to guide a client in uncovering at least some key qualities you value. Making decisions based on values is strongly encouraged!

  • Building A Confidential Trusting Relationship-This is the opportunity coaching provides. This is a space where one can experience the joy of really being listened to and understood.

  • Objective Feedback-in coaching you will get non-biased feedback, so necessary for change.

  • Encouragement-this will steer you away from being a victim by turning your complaints into requests as a result of the encouragement you receive from your coach.

The advantages are unlimited. It is easier to be with what is when you have a coach. You will build skills you never realized you had, handle transitions, and tame your inner critic. If time management is your issue, coaching will help you deal with that too. In coaching you will learn strategies, which are the artful means we use to move from current reality to implementing your goal, vision, or mission statement. Your coach will guide you into strategic thinking, so necessary to live your life to the fullest. If you want to set up a reward system, engage in habit training, learn to look ahead, or just plain support coaching is the advantage for you.

Like therapy, coaching is an on-going relationship with emphasis on listening, understanding, and bringing internal obstacles to the surface. In addition, coaching uses requests for action and accountability. A coach will work with you to identify the areas you might need to work on or gain control over.

Coaching clients are the types who are eager to move to a higher level of functioning; this might mean increased productivity, better life balance, or more personal satisfaction. They are sometimes unsure how to take the steps to accomplish this. Often coaching is the missing link that gets people thinking about their values and moving forward.
