Surfers Swim Team Capture First Place
The Surfers Swim Team swam to a first place team trophy at the second annual Trick-or-Treat Meet, held at Fairmont Aquatic Center, the 24th and 25th of October. Led by Zach Santella, 32 swimmers propelled the Surfers to a victory over 11 other teams, including one of the most successful swim teams in the state, Cottonwood Heights Aquatics Team, winner of 57 state titles.
Zach, age 10, won the high point trophy for his age group, capturing seven of his eight individual races and achieving best times in every event. Zach, the state champion in the 400 Meter Freestyle, dropped more than 15 seconds off his best time in the 200 yard Freestyle and almost three seconds off his 100 free. He also had a breakout swim in the 50 backstroke, shaving four seconds and achieving a state qualifying time.
Along with Zach, Amy Gray tied for first place and Royal Hafen took first place overall in each of their age groups. Amy has now qualified for state in six events. Royal improved in five of his eight events on his way to the top individual honor.
Chad Sorensen, Char Hafen and Samantha Vellinga each placed second in their age group. Ruth Recksiek was awarded third place. Everyone contributed to the success of the team, including 16 of the 32 swimmers scoring individual points for the overall team score. Every swimmer realized a personal best time during the meet.
The Surfers, who practice daily at the Layton Surf n swim every weekday afternoon, have been excelling more with each meet. According to the coaches, the team could never have achieved the first place win without the encouragement from each swimmer. Also, the relays were a big part of the win. The team had four relay teams take first place, along with a second and four third places.
The Trick-or-Treat Meet is the first of many big meets to come during the season leading up to the state championships in March.
Volunteers-Thank you!
Many thanks go out to each of you who helped make the meet run smooth and quickly. The meet was a great success, from concessions to hospitality to timers to meet management to winning the meet. So many people were involved in putting on a great meet for the swimmers that everyone that we have talked to has said this was one of the best meets ever put on. We hope each of you had great pleasure in helping with the meet.
We hope to continue to have the support from each of you as parent volunteers for the other meets we host throughout the year.
Thanks!!
