BACKGROUND
The
YF/A-31 was an independent venture by Dreamstars, Inc. in conjunction with
Lockheed/Martin (creators of the VF-16
Staftighter II) in late 2049. Technicians were convinced that they
could improve on the designs of both the VF-19 and VF-22 to create a hybrid
that would out perform both craft. Many in the military establishment felt
that such a variable fighter would be impossible to produce and that only with
massive quantities of the tried and true designs would the Varauta forces
be finally defeated. The funding that the two companies were hoping for
from the UN Spacy never came about, and the design would be shelved by 2052.
The YF/A-31 started out as Design 935X on the drawing boards in a back
room in the Dreamstars Testing Facility on Brittania. The engineers were
finishing the final testing on the YB-5 Vigilante Prototype Variable Bomber
that would go into production in a few months. Using lessons learned from
that experience, Dr. Franklin Zimmerman thought he could miniaturize some
of the advanced technology to improve the existing variable fighter designs
already used by the various UN Spacy armed forces. would have two revolutionary
new designs. The first was the inclusion of the Howard PBS-04G pinpoint/full
barrier system. Although, barrier systems had been designed for mecha
units four year previous, this new design could either produce a full barrier
system which would protect the mecha from any and all attacks or produce
the more traditional two pinpoint barriers which could be subsequently
placed on the mecha for protection. The second device was an internal
mecha fold generator. The YF/A-31 would no longer need to be transport
into battle with fold capable transport or have to support an easily damageable external fold generator.
In addition to these two new designs, the new "Direct Brain Targeting
System" DBTS system, which was is a direct descendent of the Brainwave
Control System (BCS) of the YF-21 Prototype, was incorporated into the
new design. The DBTS system allowed pilots to engage targets using eye
motions and voice commands at close range. It gave an edge over designs using
more conventional targeting methods, as the slowest feature was the pilot.
Instead of the enclosed cockpit of the YF-21, the cockpit
assembly of the VF-19 was installed to give better all around visibility.
The weapon systems on the YF/A-31 are fairly conventional. Four Mauler
REF-21G and a single Erlikon AAB-7.5 laser systems are mounted on the head
for defense and anti-missile protection. A pair of REB-22B laser
cannons are mounted in the wings. Mounted internally are 64 high maneuverability
mini-missiles. Four underwing and two overwing hardpoints can be used in
heavy assaults where extra firepower is required.
The first production model was rolled out on July 29, 2050. The
YF/A-31 was originally called the "Fighting Falcon" in honor of the late
20th century model. However as the plane was painted in a jade green
camouflage pattern, the nickname the "Jade Falcon" came into common practice.
Developers at Dreamstars & Lockheed/Martin decided to let the informal name stand
and thus the "Jade Falcon" was born.
By 2051, only 6 YF/A-31's have been produced. Cost overruns and developmental
problems kept the UN Spacy away from the new design. Engineers from both
companies could never get the full-barrier to sustain constant output for more
than 5 minutes. The design flaws of the original internal fold generator came
back to haunt the engineers as well. Power balance was a constant concern that
never was fully resolved.

NOTES:
-
Destroying the head of the YF/A-31 will knock out the mecha's major
sensor systems, including all of the optics systems (infrared, nightvision,
thermal). Radar and communications will be unaffected.
-
Depleting the MDC of the main body will destroy the mecha.
-
The YF/A-31 has the new Howard PBS-04G pin-point barrier system.
This new system can either produce two pinpoint barriers, each with 100
MDC each barrier can regenerate at 50 MDC per melee, or surround the mecha
with a full barrier shield of 200 MDC that regenerates at 100 MDC per round.

COMPATIBLE
FAST PACKS:
- Dorsal: NR-BP-19,
NR-BP-19-SES
- Leg: NP-FB-19
WEAPON SYSTEMS:
-
MAULER REB-22B LASER GUNS: Two semi-fixed laser gun clusters are mounted
in the arms the YF/A-31. Like the VF-22
Strumvogel the arm lasers have two exit ports (one pointing each direction)
and thus can fire either to the front or the rear of the mecha in any mode. In
fighter mode the lasers can only be aimed along the front or rear arc of the
aircraft (max angle is about 30 degrees in any direction from the centerline of
the fighter) but in gerwalk/soldier they can be aimed in any direction by moving
the mecha's arms.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Anti-mecha
- SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-aircraft
- RANGE: 4000 feet (1200 m)
- DAMAGE: 1D4x10 M.D.
- RATE OF FIRE: The laser can be fired in rapid pulses up to 4 blasts
per round. A rapid fire blast counts as a burst of up to 4 shots.
- PAYLOAD: Effectively Unlimited.
-
GU-27 SEVEN-BARREL STEALTH GATLING GUN POD: The main weapon of the YF/A-31
is a concealed handheld gun pod that can be used in fighter or soldier mode. The
gun pod is stored in a collapsed form in a concealed port on the right leg of
the mecha when in fighter and gerwalk mode, and fires out of a special port near
the top of the leg. When the VF goes to soldier mode, the gun can be ejected
into the Jade Falcon's right hand, where it automatically unfolds and is ready
for action. The gun can be re-collapsed and replaced in the port when the YF/A-31
returns to fighter or gerwalk mode. Due to the mecha's configuration, the gun
pod CANNOT be used in gerwalk mode; the exit barrel aims up at the main body,
which would cause the VF/A-31 to shoot itself in this mode.
Like the gun
pod used by the VF-19 Excalibur, the Jade Falcon's gun pod uses clips of ammo.
One spare ammo clip is kept in a port on the left leg of the YF/A-31, directly
across from the gun pod port. However, in order to switch clips the Jade Falcon
must first convert to soldier mode, so it can manually remove and replace the
gun pod's clip with its hands. Other gun pods can NOT be used by the YF/A-31, as
they will not fit in the Jade Falcon's gun pod port in fighter/gerwalk modes.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assault
- SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-mecha
- RANGE: 4000 feet (1200 m)
- DAMAGE: Does 4D6 M.D. for a short burst, 1D6x10 M.D. for a long
burst, or 2D6x10 M.D. for a full melee burst.
- RATE OF FIRE: Equal to the number of combined attacks of the pilot.
- PAYLOAD: 600 rounds per clip equals 60 short bursts, 30 long
bursts, or 15 full melee bursts. Additional ammo clips can be inserted, but
exchanging clips requires the YF/A-31 to be in soldier mode and takes a FULL
melee round (player forfeits all his attacks for that round). One spare clip
is stored in the left leg of the Jade Falcon.
-
HEAVY
LASER MODULE: This weapon is an alternative to the YF/A-31's standard gun
pod. It consists of a long tube which contains a heavy laser and a high-density
capacitor that fits on the gun pod in place of an ammo clip. This one-shot
weapon fires a beam which is powerful enough cut through the main body of most
mecha on a single hit. (!) However, there are several disadvantages to the
weapon. First off, the weapon is good only for one shot, after which the
internal capacitor is completely drained. Second, in order to carry this module
it must be stored in the YF/A-31's left leg, a spot that normally stores a spare
clip for the Jade Falcon's gun pod. This effectively halves the ammo capacity of
the YF/A-31, and greatly reduces its combat endurance. Still, many pilots feel
that the tradeoff is worth it since the heavy laser gives them the ability to
take out command mecha or even spaceships in a single shot.
- PRIMARY PURPOSE: Heavy Assault
- SECONDARY PURPOSE: Surgical Strikes
- RANGE: 5 miles (8 km)
- DAMAGE: 8D6x10 M.D. (single shot only)
- RATE OF FIRE: Once. It takes one full melee attack to eject the
unit and mount it on the gun pod in preparation to fire.
- PAYLOAD: One shot, after which the weapon is useless and must be
recharged back at base. A YF/A-31 can only carry ONE heavy laser module, and
it must be initially stored in the spare clip bay on the left leg of the
mecha. A second heavy laser CANNOT be mounted on the gun pod initially, as
the unit would not fit in the right leg weapons bay with the gun pod. When
preparing to use the heavy laser, the unit must be ejected from the left leg
and then mounted on the gun pod in place of the ammo clip. This action takes
a FULL melee round (player forfeits all his attacks for that round). After
firing the laser it may be ejected from the gun pod and replaced with the
original ammo clip if available.
-
ERLIKON AAB-9.5 AIR-TO-AIR PULSE LASER: The YF/A-31 mounts a single
pulse laser for use in air combat skirmishes and for anti-missile purposes.
The laser is mounted on the head of the mecha in soldier mode and is located
in the central dorsal section of the main body pointed to the rear in fighter
and gerwalk modes. The laser can only fire to the REAR of the fighter
in these modes.
-
PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assault/Defense
-
SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-mecha
-
RANGE: 5000 ft (1500 m)
-
DAMAGE: 3D6 M.D.
-
RATE OF FIRE: Equal to the combine attacks of the pilot
-
PAYLOAD: Unlimited
-
4 x MAULER REB-21G ANTI-AIRCRAFT PULSE LASER: The Jade Falcon mounts
four lasers on the head of the mecha in soldier mode, and is located in
the central dorsal section of the main body pointed rearward in fighter
and gerwalk modes.
-
PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assault/Defense
-
SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-mecha
-
RANGE: 5000 ft (1500 m)
-
DAMAGE: 2D6 for each single shot, or 1D4x10 for all four.
-
RATE OF FIRE: Equal to the combine attacks of the pilot
-
PAYLOAD: Unlimited
-
BIFORS BML-03S ALL-ENVIRONMENT HIGH-MANEUVERABILITY RAPID-FIRE MICRO-MISSILE
CLUSTERS: The YF/A-31 is armed with eight internal BML-03S missile
launchers. The launchers are mounted in the forward dorsal and
forward ventral sections of the craft and have exit ports on the top and
bottom wings near the engine nacelles. Any type of mini-missile can
be used by the launchers, but high-maneuverability mini-missiles are standard
issue.
-

-
BODY/WING HARD POINTS: Three (two underwing & one overwing)
fixed hard points are mounted on each wing. These hardpoints
can be used to carry a variety of different ordinance payloads, including
long, medium, or short range missiles (including high-maneuverability missiles)
or standard bombs. One long range, one MRHM, 3 medium range, 5 short range
missiles or six standard bombs can be mounted per hardpoint. Usually MRHM
missiles are used.
NOTE: Due to the location of the hardpoints, ALL missiles must
be fired or ejected before the YF/A-31 can convert into soldier mode. For
this reason the missiles on the hardpoints are usually fired within the
first few passes of an attack.

-
HOWARD PBS-04G PIN-POINT/FULL BARRIER SYSTEM: The Jade Falcon
is equipped with a advanced barrier system that can either project three
pinpoint barriers or a scaled down full barrier. The system can produce
three pinpoint barriers, each with 100 MDC of protection and regenerates
at a rate of 50 MDC per round when damaged, or surround the YF/A-31 with
a full barrier that gives 200 MDC of protection and regenerates at 100
MDC per round. Even if the shield(s) are destroyed, the power generators
will regenerates the shield(s) within 2 melees. In order to use the
pinpoint shields, the pilot must make a successful parry to intercept
the incoming attack with a single pinpoint barrier. Due to the power
requirements, the head and pulse lasers can not be used while
either system is in operations. In addition, while the full barrier
system is in use no weapons may be fired through the barrier.
-
PRIMARY PURPOSE: Defense
-
PROTECTION: 100 MDC for each pin-point barrier or 200 for
the full barrier system
-
REGENERATION RATE: 50 MDC for each pin-point barrier or 100
MDC for the full barrier system
-
SIZE: Each pin-point barrier can be up to 3 m in diameter
-
DURATION: Unlimited
-
NOTES: While the system is in operation neither the head lasers
nor the Maulers may be used. Furthermore no attacks may be fired
from the YF/A-31 while the full barrier is in operation.
HAND TO HAND COMBAT: If necessary, the YF/A-31 can engage in melee combat
rather than use a weapon. The variable fighter is extremely agile and can
execute most typical hand to hand combat moves, such as punches, jump kicks,
leap attacks, rolling with impacts, etc.
DAMAGE:
- Restrained Punch: 1D6 M.D.
- Full Strength Punch: 3D6 M.D.
- "Booster" Punch: 4D6 M.D. (counts as two attacks)
- Tear or Pry with Hands: 2D4 M.D.
- Kick: 2D4 M.D.
- Leap Kick: 3D6 M.D.
- Body Flip/Throw: 1D6 M.D.
- Body Block/Tackle: 2D6 M.D.
- Stomp: 2D6 M.D. (only effective against small objects)
STANDARD EQUIPMENT FOR THE YF/A-31:
-
AUTO-PILOT: The YF/A-31 is equipped with a computerized auto-pilot,
allowing the pilot to relax or even sleep during long voyages. The auto-
pilot can be programmed with a single destination or a complex flight plan
involving multiple speeds, directions, and destinations. The onboard computer
will alert the pilot when the fighter is near its destination, and can
also be set to automatically signal when sensors detect objects near the
mecha. The auto-pilot was designed with long intra-system space journeys
in mind.
-
COMBAT COMPUTER: The YF/A-31 is equipped with an advanced
AI combat computer that can store and analyze data during combat with hostile
forces. Data collected by the combat computer can be displayed on the virtual
environment cockpit of the mecha (see below), which allows the system to
display large amounts of data to the pilot and even highlight enemies and
missile attacks with overlaid graphics. The combat computer tracks and
identifies specific enemy targets, and has a database of over 10,000 images
stored in memory. The computer can identify and track up to 250 targets
simultaneously.
-
DETACHABLE LIMBS: The arms and legs of the Jade Falcon are detachable,
so that in the event one or more of the limbs of the mecha are damaged
they can be ejected from the main body so as to avoid creating atmospheric
drag or preventing transformation. The YF/A-31's arms and legs don't contain
any critical systems so the AVF's performance will be unaffected if they
are jettisoned.
-
DIRECT BRAIN TARGETING SYSTEM: The YF/A-31 has a
direct brain targeting system, much like the BDCS present in the VF-30 Jaguar
II,
as a result the the pilot can target any fighter by eye movements and voice
activation.
This gives the YF/A-31 its large number of attacks and high bonuses to strike
parry and dodge. For this reason, the Jade Falcon has a conventional
control system within the virtual cockpit for superior visual awareness.
-
EXTERNAL AUDIO PICKUP: Range: 300 ft (91.5 m). A sound amplification
system that can pick up normal conversation up to 300 feet away.
-
HEAT AND RADIATION SHIELDS: Special shielding prevents the penetration
of life threatening head and radiation. A radiation detection and alarm
system are linked with the shields and will sound an alarm if there is
a rupture in the shields and what the levels of radiation are.
-
HOMING SIGNAL: The escape pod of the YF/A-31 is equipped
with a homing device that enables rescue teams to locate a disabled craft
or ejected life pod. The range of the signal is 400 miles (640 km). Most
REF ships and valkyries can locate and track a homing signal, and the onboard
computers will automatically notify their pilots if such a signal is detected.
-
INTERNAL FOLD GENERATOR: In order for the Jade Falcon to
enter into and out of the battlefield a mecha fold generator is built into
each unit. These generators are only for hyperspace folds of
less than 15 light years. (make navigation space check for every fold of
less than or equal to 15 light years and -5% for every light year above
15) After each fold each unit must be recharged for a minimum of 2 hours,
during which time the mecha can not engage the pinpoint barrier system
or use the lasers. NOTE: Once the mecha has lost half its main
body MDC, there is a 50% that the fold system will fail every time the
main body of the craft is hit.
-
LASER TARGETING SYSTEM: Range: 100 miles (160 km). Used for increased
accuracy in the striking of enemy targets and is partly responsible for
the mecha's strike bonus.
-
LOUDSPEAKER: A loudspeaker system is built into the craft, which
can be used to amplify the pilot's voice up to 90 decibels.
-
OPTICS: INFRARED: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). This optical system
projects a beam of infrared light that is invisible to the normal eye,
but detectable by the mecha's sensors. The system allows the pilot to detect
hidden/concealed objects by their IR reflectiveness. The beam will be visible
to anyone with IR sensitive optics, however.
-
OPTICS: NIGHTVISION: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive light image
intensifier that emits no light of its own, but relies on ambient light
which is electronically amplified to produce a visible picture.
-
OPTICS: THERMAL IMAGER: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive optical
heat sensor that detects infrared radiation projected by warm objects and
converts that data into a false-color visible image. The system enables
the pilot to see in the dark, in shadows, and through smoke, and also adds
a +10% bonus to pilots using a tracking skill.
-
RADAR: 200 mile (321 km) range.
-
RADIO/VIDEO COMMUNICATION: Long range, directional communications
system with satellite relay capabilities. Range: 600 miles (960 km) or
can be boosted indefinitely via satellite relay.
-
SELF-DESTRUCT: To prevent capture of an advance variable fighter
by the enemy, the pilot can activate the YF/A-31 self-destruct system,
which will cause the fighter to explode after a delay of up to 60 minutes
(time is set by the pilot). The explosive damage is contained within a
20 foot (6 m) area and inflicts 1D6x10 M.D. to everything within the radius
of the explosion. All internal systems are obliterated. The escape pod
will be automatically ejected prior to the explosion unless the pilot overrides
the ejection sequence.
-
STANDARD SURVIVAL KIT: All REFs variable fighters come equipped
with a portable survival kit. Inside the small reinforced box is a medium-sized
flashlight, two hand flares, one rocket flare, a compass, infrared distancing
binoculars, a small mirror, a pocket knife, dehydrated and concentrated
food (can be stretched into a five day supply for one person) and basic
first aid items (aspirin, bandages, disinfectants, etc.)
-
TACTICAL LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM: The YF/A-31 cockpit is pressurized,
and also provides additional air feeds to the pilot's flight suit that
provides him with pressurized breathing. The REF flight suit also contains
an upper and lower g-suit that promotes blood circulation even during high-g
turns, thus decreasing the possibility of pilot's blacking out in combat.
-
VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT COCKPIT: The YF/A-31 is equipped with the now
standard VF-19 cockpit layout that provides monitors below and around the pilot
in addition to the HUD cockpit dome. In flight, these monitors display what is
below and behind the aircraft, giving the pilot a tremendous field of view that
is unparalled by any other aircraft (with the possible exception of the VF-30's
brain-direct imaging system).
COMBAT BONUSES FOR YF/A-31 FIGHTER TRAINING:
NOTE: Due to the prototype nature of the YF/A-31, it is highly
recommended that no player be allowed to start the game with YF/A-31 combat
training. Untrained pilots should get bonuses equal to Basic Variable
Fighter Combat Training when piloting the YF/A-31, and military pilots
with no prior YF/A-31 experience should get full bonuses from Advanced
VF-19 Excalibur Combat Training. Players should only be allowed to get
advanced training for the YF/A-31 when their characters have accumulated
enough experience to acquire new skills.
-
6 attacks per melee (plus those of the pilot)
-
Add one additional action/attack at levels five and ten.
-
+3 on initiative
-
+5 to strike
-
+5 to parry
-
+7 to dodge in solder and guardian, +9 in jet mode.
-
+4 to roll with a punch or fall with an impact, reducing damage by half.
-
Critical strike same as pilot's hand-to-hand.
