Course Description

This course is the first part of a four skills college level introduction to Spanish that prepares the student to begin to communicate in the language. A variety of basic situations are covered. The course presents the fundamental grammatical structures by means of an eclectic approach, which includes listening, speaking, reading and writing. Basic cultural information about the countries that make up the Hispanic world is included in each chapter along with opportunities to compare that information with aspects of the students’ own culture.

Course Requirements

Attendance/Participation and Vocabulary Quizzes/ Class Assignments:

Attendance/Participation

Learning a new language well requires consistent attendance. Attendance is taken each class session. According to TVI attendance policy, students enrolled for credit or audit are expected to attend all class sessions. The instructor may drop students with excessive absences (15% of total class hours--4 absences for 16 week courses that meet twice a week, three absences for 12 week courses that meet twice a week, 2 absences for 16 week courses that meet once a week). Failure to attend the first two weeks of classes will result in the student being dropped.  Also, if you are doing homework in class, whether for Spanish Class or another, you will be counted absent.  If you leave class to “retrieve” or “print” homework, you will be counted absent.

Your attendance/ daily assignments grade is calculated by the number of days you are present by the numbers of days in the term. You receive 100% each day you are present and 0% each day you are absent. If you leave early or come in late, you receive 50% for that day.

As an incentive for perfect attendance, the instructor will replace a Chapter Test score with a perfect 100% for perfect attendance. Perfect attendance is defined as no missed classes nor any tardies or leaving early.

Under no circumstances are you allowed to attend a section that is not your own. Some classes are 16 week courses or 12 week courses. These classes will not coincide.

Please put your cell phone on silent or vibrate mode.  If this cannot be done, and if there is an emergency and a cell phone rings, the student needs to leave the class room.

Also, note that leaving the class early after taking a vocabulary quiz, a chapter test, or an oral presentation will result in a full absence,

It is your responsibility to drop or change the grade mode for the class. The date is included in the class schedule.

There will be daily activities in class, both oral and written, in which the student is expected to fully participate. Some assignments will be designated as homework from the textbook. In order to participate fully, these assignments should be completed before they are reviewed in class.

Class Attendance and Participation are worth 10% of the Final Grade.

Vocabulary-Grammar Quizzes and Daily Assignments

There will be a quiz in class everyday.  The daily quizzes will be comprised of vocabulary, conjugations, and grammar. No make up quizzes are allowed.

 -or-

There will be daily assignments, both oral and written, in which the student is expected to fully participate. Some assignments will be designated as homework from the textbook. In order to participate fully, these assignments should be completed before they are reviewed in class. Do not complete work in class because if you are doing homework,  as stated before, you will be counted absent, and a quiz will be given.

Vocabulary-Grammar Quizzes and Daily Assignments count as 10% of the final grade.

Workbook/Laboratory Manual

The combined workbook/laboratory manual is designed to reinforce the material presented in the textbook. The manual provides practice in each of the skills as specified in the course objectives. Each component is an important part of the course. All workbook and laboratory manual exercises are due on the day of the test. Late work will not be accepted. The reason for requiring that workbook/laboratory manual exercises be completed by the scheduled test date is so that the student has sufficient opportunity to master the material presented in class and is optimally prepared to take the test.

The workbook/laboratory manual will be delivered on-line using a QUIA environment.  The student must have a ONE KEY pass and an email address to access the workbook/laboratory manual.  Please be advised, that like in all hybrid courses, some of the class material is offered via the web.  The Internet is not always dependable. Please print the “grade sheet” available on QUIA for your own records.  I am not responsible if your grades are deleted on QUIA due to a problem on the server or the QUIA program.  You may bring a copy of the grade sheet with you on the day of the Test.

The workbook/laboratory manual each is worth 10% for a total of 20% of the final grade.

Chapter Tests

There will be a chapter test at the end of each chapter(1-4) for a total of four. There are no make-up chapter tests allowed; however, the instructor will drop the lowest Chapter Test score at the end of the semester. Thus, should a student miss a scheduled Chapter Test due to unavoidable circumstances, the grading consequences are minimized. Only one 'drop' is allowed. The Chapter Tests total 30% of the Final Grade.

Chapter Tests will be given 30 minutes at the beginning of class, class will resume after 30 minutes. Also, note that leaving the class early after taking a vocabulary quiz, a chapter test, or an oral presentation will result in a full absence,

Oral Presentations

There will be Three Oral Presentations at the end of the term.  The will be three topics of the presentations: poema "Yo soy," "Yo voy a ...," and "Ser and Estar." The format and forms are available on the website.  These must be type written.  The will not be accepted and if you write them in class, you will get a zero and be counted absent as well. Please follow directions and keep it simple. I can take a look at these if you email them to me prior to the day of your presentations.  Please do not do so on that day because I more than likely will not get a chance to see them. No make ups allowed for oral presentations. The Oral Presentations total 10% of the final grade.

Final Exam

There will be a comprehensive mandatory final exam covering the material in chapters 1 through 4. The Final Exam is worth 20% of Final Grade.

Supplemental Instruction Sessions (if offered this term):

“Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a peer-facilitated academic support program that helps students enrolled in historically challenging courses.  In regularly scheduled, out of class sessions, students work together to master course content and develop organizational, study, and learning skills.

SI sessions are free, voluntary, and open to the entire TVI student population of each designated course.  SI's goal is to aid all students in a class, regardless of their knowledge or ability level.

Peer leaders, or Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders, are course-competent students who help guide students to a greater understanding of course content by facilitating student discussion during the out-of-class sessions and who work to further develop student learning and study skills.  SI leaders attend course lectures, take notes, and read all assigned material.

In the fifty minute long sessions, which meet on a regular schedule several times a week, students work together under the guidance of the SI leader.  Students compare notes, discuss readings and concepts, work on practice quizzes and tests, and take part in a variety of other collaborative activities.  Through tips from SI leaders and interaction with fellow students, students also learn helpful strategies for studying and learning.” (From the La Comunidad Website, http://planet.tvi.edu/lacomunidad/).

On a separate sheet, you will receive a list of SI session periods offered.

Extra-credit will be awarded at the end of the term to participants in the SI sessions.  The amount of your attendance in the SI sessions will be divided by the total amount SI sessions offered per week per period multiplied by 10. A maximum of 10 points towards the final grade allowed. SAME PRINCIPLE OF ATTENDANCE APPLIES TO SI SESSIONS, IF YOU LEAVE EARLY YOU RECEIVE A 50%, IF YOU STAY ALL PERIOD YOU RECEIVE A 100%. "SIGNING IN" FOR THE SI SESSION WILL NOT BE COUNTED!!!!

Optional Field trips:

There will be opportunities to go on class field trips (during outside of class). These field trips are optional. During these field trips, you will work on a project. If you go on these field trips, you may use only one as a make up Chapter Test. This means you may replace a test that you have taken and received a low grade. You may not, however, use the field trip project to replace a test you have missed. If you choose to go on more than one trip, you will receive 10 points extra credit to be used on a test or exam. Venues for the field trips will be Santa Fe, Chimayó, Acoma, Albuquerque Old Town, and the Salinas Pueblos.

The reason why I give so much extra credit for a field trip is because it is a learning experience in the real world and there is a great deal of work and effort put in these trips by students who attend these all day. Also, it is a trip where I offer instruction.  Please do not ask for alternative forms of extra credit.

Supplementary Materials

In addition to the text and combined manual, the following material is available with the ¡ARRIBA! curriculum: transparency masters, computer study modules, and a text specific CD-ROM interactive program, Spanish situation cards and, a video program. The video activities (Workbook/Laboratory Manual/Video Manual) are designed for use with the eight modules that accompany ¡ARRIBA! Your instructor may have you view the video and do the activities in class, or assign you to view the video and complete all or part of the activities in the language lab. Instructor may also elect to supplement pertinent cultural information from other sources.

Students are expected to complete any and all other homework assignments and projects as required by the instructor and that is in accordance with the overall program for Spanish 101 at TVI. Instructor may adjust the grading requirements accordingly if necessary or, supplementary materials can be incorporated into classroom instruction and form part of the overall classroom participation exercises.

Class Schedule

Attached you will find a schedule for the class. Please note that this schedule is subject to change. Due to Holidays and Campus wide school cancellations, sometimes this schedule has to change. It is your responsibility to keep up to date on any changes. These changes will be announced in class. Find a phone buddy in the class so you can be notified of any changes.

In the event TVI closes during finals week:

Final grades for students will be calculated based on all work assessed up to that point in the course.

Grading Procedure

The final grade will be a combination of workbook, laboratory manual, class participation, chapter tests, vocabulary quizzes and final exam.

*It is a Department of Communications, Humanities, and Social Sciences policy that all courses have final evaluation. Failure to take the final exam results in an ‘F’ for the course.

"The Fine Print"

Please note that workbook, lab manual, class attendance, vocabulary quizzes, and oral presentations are worth more than the final exam and chapter tests. Do not make a common error thinking that the tests are only important. There will be detrimental consequences to your grade if you fail to complete the other requirements. This also means you must attend class if you want to pass!!!
