Thoughts of a Hobbit

Food, so glorious, full on my table,
to chew and enjoy for months on end.
Green lovely Shire, fields all of light,
dark, dirty earth, to strengthen my hands.
Food, so lovely, at the Green Dragon,
to consume and bring in to my already full belly.
Sweet Hobbit lasses, dancing at feasts,
pleasing to the eye, comfort to the soul.
Food born of feasting, both day and night,
to inhale and fill what goes empty in seconds.
Pipeweed on fire, lit to enjoy
time of pure chatting as smoke rings lie heavy.
Food, that sustenance, that keeps us alive,
I must have more to maintain my size.

Oh we Hobbits take joy in so very much,
I think you'd agree, it's slightly unfair
to say all we love is a good hot lunch.
It's not that we neglect other areas of life,
but food's such a warm, kindly friend
in a world full of strife!

The Pantry at Bag End

In my pantry seedcakes nestle,
Big, sweet buns await for tea,
Honey cakes and ham and apples,
All are kept here lovingly.

Great big jars of apple jelly
And a loaf of currant bread,
Eggs a-plenty, lovely bacon,
Or a mutton joint instead.

If the dwarves come back to visit
Laden tables there will be,
If they don't, so much the better!
More for Frodo and for me!

Sam's Advice to Elanor

Now, Elanor, be gentle-handed,
Move the seedlings carefully,
Treat them well while they are little,
Greater strength you're sure to see.

Here the soil is rich and sheltered,
What sets root here can climb high.
Always, little one, remember,
What has strong roots will not die.

From the storms and frosts preserve it
If there's any way you can,
But if you cannot, be grateful
You were kind when it began.

In the days of our beginnings,
In the soil where we take root,
Lies the strength to claim the future
And the sweetness of our fruit.

Reasons to Fight

For many things big folk may fight,
For anger or for pride,
To prove their courage or to show
The rightness of their side,
For elven places, now at risk,
For love or destiny,
For friendship or for oaths once sworn,
Or boundless enmity,
To try a sword or test a truth,
To keep some secret hid,
To save a reputation
Or for power make a bid.
For many things the big folk fight,
For pride, faith or desire.
But I'm a hobbit and I serve
The honour of the Shire!

The Song of the Sun
(Sung by Hobbits in the Green Dragon)

Night it can fall
But the day must come
All darkness gives way
to merriment
We shall drink in the darkness
Because we know we will drink in the light
Shadow can come
But we Hobbits go on
Eating and shining like the sun.
