2003 Hamtramck Blowout

What is the sound of one hand clapping?  Or more accurately, one man clapping?  The answer lies the Blue Sunrays sparsley attended foray into the Metro Times' Hamtramck Blowout 2003.  A last minutes addition, the band was scheduled to play the quaint and stageless Whiskey in the Jar.  By far the smallest place TBS has played, nonetheless the owners brought in what amounted to the best sound equipment and sound guy they had worked with so far.  There were monitors for God's sake.  Monitors.  But by the time TBS started playing there weren't a lot of people left to appreciate the great sound.  The second band playing that night, Desolation Angels Detroit, had brought out a good crowd for themselves.  They even brought a girl who pushed CD's into people's hands.  Always useful.  But by the time they packed up and TBS were setting up, they all disappeared.  Gone.  Left with their guitar cases.  So they played to the staff, the few guys from the next band, and a sole supporter, Mauricio.  Strange indeed.  Of course, as soon as they were done, people started packing in for the next band.  So that was that.  The band would like to thank; the assistant sound man with turrets syndrome, the guy who was unintentially impersonating Chong, the wasted old man with encyclopedic knowledge of eye care, the kind limo drivers, the crazy guy we rode with inside the limo, the girl with the glasses who disappeared before she got to hear the band, the TV for having closed captions, the Metro Times ticket girl, the Metro Times stage guy who helped us carry equipment, all the beers we had, and of course, Mauricio for providing the sound of one man clapping.
