EYE BLOOD FICTION

These include my poems and stories.

Some are actually non-fiction.

I'm even writing a book.

The reason I decided to call it Eye Blood is because when most people read my work, I'm guessing they want to stab their eyeballs with something pointy just to keep from reading any longer.

Get ready for some eye stabbing action then...

This is not a poem or an essay or a short story. It's more like a long organized thought that I think a lot of people would be able to relate to. Also, it's a good example of my writing style.

PLENTY OF NOVELS

(My Metaphor For Relationships)

By THAD

You know that saying, "There are plenty of fish in the sea"?  That metaphor sucks.

Imagine you're writing a book.  How long will it take you?  Well let's say you've been writing this book for over a year… and suddenly everything you've written is gone.  It's erased off of your hard drive, no where to be found.  And if you had a hard copy, imagine if you will that someone took all those thousands of pages and just set them on fire.  Yes, thousands.  If you've spent at least a couple days out of every week for over a year, you're bound to have that much material.  Anyway, just picture all that work going up in smoke.  THAT'S WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE DUMPED!

"There are plenty of novels left to be written," is my equivalent of the fish saying.

Wouldn't exactly make you feel any better, would it?  Okay, so maybe it's true… there ARE plenty of novels left to be written.  But it may take quite some time before you feel like starting another novel.  You get to thinking about how far you'd gotten with your other one before it was destroyed.  To have to start all over again is a concept that gives you a pit in your stomach… not to mention a giant fucking headache.  Also, let's not forget that if you start writing again too soon, you're bound to repeat a lot of the same storyline as your other novel… and that will only end up reminding you of what you lost, which will most likely frustrate you even more.

However… if you decide to take a break from writing… maybe just spend some time gathering your thoughts and ideas… in time, you'll be ready to start a completely new and different novel.  The more involved you get in this new storyline and the more and more pages you end up writing, the easier it will be to forget about the old one.  In fact, you get to thinking, "This book's turning out BETTER than that other one!"  Before you know it, you've been working on this epic story for 3 years!  You love it so much, you keep adding more and more, certain that THIS was truly meant to be your masterpiece!  How many pages do you think you have by now?

The answer is none…

Because that one just got set on fire, too.
