| My name is Brittany and I am the founder and head trainer of Working Paws Assistance Dogs formally known as Character Matters Service Dogs. I would like to tell you a little about me and how this became my passion to work with and train rescue dogs to work with disabled individuals. I grew up in the dog world, we had two different show dogs while I was growing up. My aunt and uncle also breed and showed dogs in the AKC Show ring. I was often with them learning different things about dog gaits, behavior, and grooming. Ever since I can remember, I was always at one of our local nursing homes with either my Rough Collie or my Bouvier des Flandres. When we would walk in the door it would brighten the life of an elderly individual and great big smile would come to their face. I contuined to do this until my last dog passed away in 2003. Around 2004 I meet a gentleman at a camp that I was working at that had a service dog. This man more or less took me under his wing and agreeded to teach me how to train these special dogs and has encouraged me to go forward with this dream. Still to this day if I am having a problem with a dog I will contact him and ask for advice. Over the past three years I have assisted people with disabilities in training their own dogs to become service animals. I have also worked with a local library to have a dog visit during childrens reading time as well as get 5 different individuals set up with taking their dogs and other small and furry pets into nursing homes for visitation. |
