| The Mines family left its mark with, among other things, a school named after Henry Caswell Mines who served on the board of Howland schools for 44 years. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| If you're a first-time visitor, let me introduce myself. My name is Christine Mines Morgan, and I've been working on my family history since January 2000, after I inherited a lot of information from my dad's sister. Much of what she had was strictly on the Mines line, and had been passed down to her (although she did a her own research, as well) and included almost no documentation. I've spent a lot of my time trying to gather the proofs, besides finding a great deal of new information, much of which has come from other researchers who were extremely generous in sharing what they had. Lately another cousin, a descendant of Dorothy Mines Rishel, has been helping out with her own interests in the family genealogy. Thanks, Sandi Bullock! |

| Here is a brief history of the family, a synopsis of some of my research. The furthest back we know in the direct Mines line, is Peter, who fought in the Revolutionary War. He had a son, Lewis, who married Hannah Gabbert and fought in the War of 1812. They had one son, James Madison Mines, who married Ellen King and had 9 children, only two of whom were boys to carry on the Mines name. Lewis, Hannah, James, Ellen and many of their children are buried in Clarksburg, West Virginia, where the family moved about 1841. A fair amount is known about the 9 children and their families, primarily about the Lewis Henry Mines family, from which I am descended. I also discovered much interesting information about the family of Lewis Henry's second wife, Caroline Titchenal. Her direct line, originally spelled Tichenor, has been in America since the mid-1600's. It's also through her line that I am related to actress Jamie Lee Curtis (5th cousins once removed). Click on the "stories" button above, to learn about Carrie's great-grandparents who were scalped by Indians in 1791. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| I am still not over my disappointment that the Civil War general who I thought was my fourth-great uncle is not actually a blood relative. But, he's close, and he's a pretty cool guy, so check him out anyway. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
